I have some asthma issues, is Taiwan very polluted? I've heard its better than mainland China.
I also survived visiting India for 3 weeks as a comparison, and had very minimal problems there, including New Delhi. |

It can be, especially in some places, but it has improved over the years. I think the high humidity during winter and early spring is at least as much of a concern, at least it is for me. I think it depends on your symptoms and what triggers them. The only way to know for sure is to come here and see how your body reacts. |

It's bad.
For instance, if I was back home in Washington and we had an Air Quality reading like we have here in Taipei, people would be freaked. It'd be on the news and they'd be talking about it. Yet, here, it's a daily occurrence. The daily pollutions levels in Taipei would be deemed "Dangerous" back home.
I'm often sick in Taipei and the air is often a foggy haze. It's not a clean place to live, that's for sure.
Try Japan if you want a cleaner environment to teach EFL in. |

A lot of locals wear masks in Taipei but I don't think it's all that bad. However, when you go down South you do notice a big difference. The air is a lot better. |

Some clarification :
The entire east coast is quite polluted, especially in the south (Kaohsiung), but if you go to the southern tip of Taiwan and the west coast it is less polluted. However, it is really hard to find jobs in places that are not polluted.

I feel the pollution is getting worse. I live in Taichung and the pollution level is increasing. I've been told this is due to lack of rainfall. Perhaps.
When i lived in a smaller town not to far away i never had any personal problems, now my nose feels blocked frequently and i have a cough on and off, something that has never happened to me before.
The last couple of weeks the view from my room hasn't been too bad, but there was a good month, i think it was March, where io could not see the mountains due to all the smog.
It's been a factor in what's making me decide to leave. However, i've been told many Asian countries are like this. |

You will also notice that a couple times a year the farmers burn all their fields during the same week, and it can get so bad that even at night, you could see the smog against you scooter or car head light beams. |

I have been living in Kaohsiung for 6 weeks now and it is possible that it has been an unusually good 6 weeks or that at this time of year the pollution isn't bad, but I have to say I've been surprised at how little pollution there seems to be.
The only comment I would make is that everywhere I've been it seems that you are not far away from a sewer grate and the smell of raw sewage. It definitely can make some people feel quite nauseous and takes a little getting used to.
Other than that the air seems fairly good so far. |
