Is there anywhere in China that offers these courses that anyone knows off? Thing that annoys me is its 995 pounds to do a celta where i am (about $1800 us) but just 80 miles away in Leeds its 780 pounds. Lol yet again a victim of where I live, so I have 400 pounds saved up now and the cheapest price i've found for a Celta in Europe is in Wroclaw/Budapest in the high 600;s, I also need to find money for rent etc so whether I stay in Newcastle or go to Europe i'm looking at spending at least 1000. So I thought is there no chance of combining my studies with my looking for a job in China and actually studying for my TESOL/Celta out in the far east? I know they do it in Bangkok (at about 900 pounds mind) but what about in China?

Coz I dont know how before late August (when i'm going to have to be flying out to China to take up my position), I am going to be able to find a job to work and save up enough money for my CELTA & living expenses during it, apply for my Celta, wait for the course to start (as cant apply before I have the money ready), do the course, work again to save up for flights to Beijing and initial spending money in China, etc etc etc. And if I have to miss out til the Feb semester i'll just die.

So if I can fly out to China a month or 2 early and do my TEFL course out there it would make things much easier I think. So what are my options (short of robbing a bank)?

Hey Irish!

I don't think you're gunna get any better than what you're quoted already and I've heard nothing about courses in China. Thailand, Vietnam, Eastern Europe and the UK are the breeding grounds, but China? Do they know what one is yet?

Hmm money the bane of my life Evil or Very Mad

thanks anyway, maybe i should go and sell myself down on Pink lane as its the only way im going to raise the money in time Sad

actually its time thats the problem I suppose. Its going to take me at least 2 months to save up. Now assuming I get a job tommorow that would only leave me with the money to apply for a course on June the 1st. It will take at the very least a month to get onto a course which would run from July the 1st til August 1st, leaving me with 14 days or so (and who is going to employ someone for that amount of time) to save up for my flights to China and spending money, nevermind finding a job in that time.

I cant see what my options are here short of stealing a grand from somewhere!! Why does Newcastle have to be so expensive? If I was still in London I could have done it for 695 pounds!!

I might just have to take the plunge and work in China for a year on some generic/useless certificate which I can afford now and come back next summer to do my Celta?

Time and money, my oldest foes.

Well i'm going to try and get a loan from either my parents or from a bank as I really want to do the CELTA, not just to make myself a better teacher but also for the experience of the course itself (i like an educational challenge). Failing that 2 jobs if I can, still its going to be tough.

You should post on the teacher training forum. There will be more chance of an answer there. I do seem to recall that there is a CELTA being run in China. But that may be false memory sydrome.

I seem to remember something about a TESOL or CELTA in Shanghai being discussed a few weeks back... don't have time to search for it now but just look in the "job related" section...

if you only have 400 quids, how in hell are u gonna pay for your plane ticket? just wondering?

I have 400 quid now, I wont be getting on a plane until August, that gives me 4.5 months to save up, at 400 pounds a month that i can save thats 1800 pounds before I leave on a flight to China.

Air Austria has a flight from London to Beijing on August 15th for 285 pounds leaving me 1315 pounds to take to China with me (about RMB 20000)

Check out www.silc.com. It's based in Shanghai and is owned by Australians with a solid reputation. I don't know the price, but I do know the sterling quality of their school.

Another option: ESF (English Schools Foundation) in Hong Kong runs special postgraduate courses in summer. SInce I had occupational links to ESF I can certainly recommend them as a school. For the exact website you will need to run a google search, though.
And the HK Institute of Education has courses too.

Actually the CELTA opened in Shanghai last fall. The only other place I know is the Boland school., near Shanghai.
