A friend of mine is thinking of partnering with New Oriental in Shanghai. He is a businessman; I am an EFL teacher. I would appreciate my bretheren's advice about New Oriental.
Thanks |

Captain Midnight, NO is a money making machine, who will teach students to pass exams with writing templates and write big words to help them getter higher test scores. To me they are the Walmart of English teaching. Every major town in China has several schools/storefronts with gleaming windows and an exquisite green and white storefronts. Education for the rich masses with Chinese characteristics. Good luck to your friend and you. Caveat Emptor |

I would question why a branch in Shanghai needs foreign investment? Shanghai has been westernized for years, and NOE has been there from day one.
Shouldn't they be making enough money to expand on their own? Or maybe the Shanghai-ese people expect a bit more then what NOE can provide? I don't think the brand commands much respect anymore. Maybe at a location further inland. In Shanghai there is Disney, Wallstreet, Golden, Kids Palace, Gymbori (?spelling?), DD... Nothing to really set NOE apart.
I think your friend can kiss his investment goodbye. |

Thank you both for your input. If there is anyone else out there with information, I would like to hear it. |
