Hello, I am seeking some advice for teaching English in China. As a preface, someone can refer to my other thread about my situation:
http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=94490
Essentially I am looking for a way, if possible, to get my foot in the door and begin teaching without a degree, and earn my degree while teaching in China. If I don't start off earning the required money to make this possible, it would be fine if I could work up to this through experience and private lessons.
Is this course of action feasible in your mind? If so what would be a good city/province for me to find work in? Beggars can't be choosers but I would prefer to find a city that isn't too polluted, with friendly locals and good food. Is there any advice you can offer me to help me find my way?
My other primary concern is regarding the CELTA certification. Is taking the CELTA in China and job seeking a job on the ground a good plan? I have heard some people saying getting a job on the ground may not be a good idea in China, and I've read elsewhere that it would be fine so I am a bit confused on this point.
Sorry for the numerous amount of questions, but I do appreciate any advice anyone can lend me. Thanks!! |

I got my last job here from out of the country, but I asked LOTS of questions and made sure the contract didn't have any ambiguity. I usually prefer to see the place and meet the administrators. |

Try a coastal city.

Taking any kind of TEFL course in one country and looking for a job in the same country seems to be a good idea. While on the course you can do a bit of networking and get some good info on the job search that'll help you once you finish the course. Being in the country while searching for a job is usually an advantage, for the reason noted by the above poster - you can see the place and meet the administrators. But I'll add that of the four jobs I've held in China the one job where I visited the city and met the FAO upfront turned out to be my worst job (probably an anomaly). |
