This is a friendly warning to anyone who is thinking of working for this company. The school is located in Chengdu, and is run by a dishonest snake called MOD EDIT (both Chinese men).

The school pays bottom of the ladder salaries (5000 a month for 5 days a week and many classes). They will hire you out to schools around and outside Chengdu. But this is not the problem, as when you sign the contract you will know this. They have extreme difficulties in getting work visas, and will try to put you onto a business visa, even though they promised they can do it.

They will ALWAYS pay late.

They promised to pay for my flights to Hong Kong, and this was agreed in the contract. But they then took it out of my salary.

DONT TRUST THIS SCHOOL. SPEAK TO ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN IN CHENGDU FOR A WHILE. THEY WILL TELL YOU HOW MOD EDIT IS SUCH A CROOK AND HAS CHEATED FOREIGNERS MANY TIMES AND EVEN GOT ONE DEPORTED UNFAIRLY. HE HAS A TERRIBLE REPUTATION AMONGST FOREIGNERS HERE, PLEASE DONE FALL VICTIM LIKE I DID, IF YOU ARE NEW TO THE CITY, THERE ARE SO MANY JOBS AROUND!

Well, that's sounds a little disparaging, however, I am a newbie to the whole a TEFL gig. The reason I learned about NAESL is that I was just married in Chengdu and want to move back there ASAP. NAESL seems the way to go for an 11 months contract. If you have another recommendation for a school in Chengdu, please tell me soon before I sign their contract.

If I were you, I'd look into universities in Chengdu. The pay should be around the same, but, you'd have a better schedule = more time with the wife.

Why rush back and start working in July when most university teachers are enjoying themselves?

So you plan on signing a contract after being warned?

After they cheat you, what will you do then?

I heard one negative thing from someone I don't even know. Maybe they have an axe to grind here, how should I know?

Exactly. no need to take unsubstantiated warnings as if they're gospel. I do recommend a bit of digging though just to get the real scoop on this school, or any others in Chengdu you might be interested in. That's the wisest course of action.

I don't recall hearing about a Chamber of Commerce in any chinese cities. How do you recommend investigating them?

if your wife is still in chengdu (sounds like she is) then obviously you're going to go back one way or another, right? check the school out on the ground when you get back or have your wife get their info and contact them directly. email or phone them and talk to the employer and employees. Other than that, check other esl sites and try digging for more info.

Being paid late is never good. How late did they pay you?

To be honest, this sounds more like a warning to use some common sense rather than don't work for this school. If you knew all these things before signing the contract, why did you sign it?

According to an earlier thread you started it appears the school tried to get the documents for the Z visa but you were then told you lacked the relevant experience (6 months v. a year).

School Promised Z visa, now saying F visa

Lack of the proper visa, while illegal, isn't the worst problem here. Many people in China work on F visas and are happy doing so. The problem you had is that you knowingly signed a bad contract and then found out you couldn't get a Z visa, and thus had no recourse when things went pear shaped. Most of your complaints listed here could have been eliminated or minimized by negotiating a better deal before signing (doable).

How about a bit of elaboration on this deportation?
