Hi Everyone,

I am a 22 year old Australian, born and raised. I speak some Japanese, and in a couple of months will hold a CELTA or TESOL. I have a profound interest in Japanese culture, History, and Arts including film, and literature. I do not hold a degree of any form at present. As such i am looking for advice on my chances of working in Japan as an English teacher.

I work in a Japanese restaurant in the Blue Mountains were i met my girlfriend. Recently her visa expired and she had to return to her home a couple of hours outside of Tokyo.

I would like to attempt to travel to Japan using the working holiday visa entitled to me as a citizen of Australia, but i do not if know given the credentials i hold it would be at all feasible for me to be employed, especially given the current economic climate in Japan.

I was hoping some more experienced teachers would be able to give me advice on the matter, and possible answer the following questions for me. Any additional information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

1) Given that i do not hold a Bachelor degree would I be able to work in Japan in any aspect of the field of English teaching?

2) How many hours are holders of working holiday visas allowed to work weekly, and does it matter if i am intend to only work in one area of Japan?

3) Does extending the 6 month working holiday require returning to Australia? I know for Australians we can only obtain the visa at the Japanese embassy.

4) Are there any jobs I can apply for outside of Japan, as i wish to maximise my potential working time as from what i have heard most companies employ on a yearly contract.

I don't really mind where I work, or what sort of Job it is as long as i can cover my living expenses.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my post, and for any advice or even just a nudge in the right direction.

どぞ よろしく おねがいします!

- Felix

No degree means you come on a working holiday visa for 18 months max. If you have 3 or more years of teaching experience, you can get a full working visa.

Understandable, but that means nothing to an employer or immigration (unless you marry her and get a spouse visa).

Yes, it's "feasible". Nobody can tell you just how likely it is, though. Just apply. At least you don't need an employer sponsorship, and you can take on solely PT work if you like.

See above. Some employers will not, however, want to take you on, even though legally they can.

You can work FT or PT. Look at the WHV homepage. It says so. The idea of FT work is that technically you don't hold the same job for 12 months. Many employers look the other way on that, though.

One area of Japan? No, you can work anywhere in Japan.

3) Does extending the 6 month working holiday require returning to Australia?
You really need to do more homework with the WHV people. No, you do not have to return to Oz.

4) Are there any jobs I can apply for outside of Japan, as i wish to maximise my potential working time as from what i have heard most companies employ on a yearly contract.
Apply for anything you like while you are outside or inside Japan. There aren't as many that recruit from abroad. A very few will do a Skype interview. The few big eikaiwa do, but I don't know if they all take WHV holders.

"Living expenses" is not the term you should use. You are still technically on a holiday, so it is holiday expenses. And, it's all a cr@p shoot as to whether you can pick up enough work to earn that much. You have to prove to the WHV authorities that you have bought a ticket and have a certain amount of funds already in hand first.
