My wife and I might be spending a few nights in the centre of Madrid in late July. We're wondering whether this is a good time to be there or not, or does it make any difference? We're aware that some European cities can be dead in the height of summer, but are hoping that Madrid will not be ... We would be hoping to visit the big art galleries, eat out, see some live music and try and stay awake longer than usual, a la Madrid.

And I expect it will be a bit hot ... though surely no worse than HK!

Thanks for any info, tips, advice etc.

This is the best time to visit the galleries when there are relatively few others there.
Madrid is quite dead in the height of summer but it's a good time to be here. The locals head to the beach which means there is a higher proportion of well mannered people hanging around. I'm cynical. I wish that "teaching in Madrid" summary was not locked...

Anyway, it's a great city and you can have a lot of fun here. Although it is searingly hot, the heat is dry so not as tiring as it is in Barcelona or somewhere like HK.

Just to say ... Madrid in late July is great! I assume it's a bit quieter than usual (which is good) but we also found that it wasn't that hot - balmy, breezy evenings and fairly cool mornings. Just a bit much for a few hours in the afternoon. But compared to HK very comfortable temperatures indeed. Oh yes, and plenty going on too ... I'll be back, I hope.

Aye, it is really hot but very low humidity so totally bearable. Get a place with air con though or you will cook.
