Hi everyone, I would like to thank you for reading my post and hope that you can offer insight into my job search situation.
About me:
-24 yr-old, Canadian female, with a B.Sc. and B.Ed (just graduated) and no formal teaching experience
-My dream is to teach English in the Middle East (esp. Saudi, UAE, Qatar). -Because I do not have an English degree, I plan to do the CELTA program this august.
My questions:
1. Can I land an English teaching job in the Middle East with qualifications (Celta) but no formal experience ? If so, which areas/schools?
2. If not, then which countries/agencies do you recommend I apply to and why?
3. What is a realistic entry-level salary for someone with a CELTA where YOU are? Do they increase the salary if you have a B.Ed?
I apologize for asking so many questions, but I really need direction at this point. Thanks for your help! |

Welcome to the boards.
With a BEd, I'm assuming you're a licensed teacher, K to 12, right? The best thing for you to do would be to get two years teaching experience under your belt and then you could work at intl schools. Right now some places MAY hire you, but most peopel in the ME have a couple years experience, and masters degrees.
you have to choose what you want:
K to 12, you usulaly need to be a licensed teahcer with 2 years teaching experience in schools
teaching in unis, you usually need a masters degree and 2 years teaching experience at the uni levels.
1. TEFLing, probably not. Teaching K to 12, MAYBE.
2. Asia is a good place to start. China, korea, Taiwan. mexico as well.
3. In Peru it was about 600 dollars, I'm in asia now and it's about 1800. Difference is that in Peru you get dnothing. Here in asia, you get housing, flights, and a visa. With a BEd, you can get into an intl school and get from 1000 to 5000 a month, plus benefits. Depends on the country. |

Thanks naturegirl! Very useful info.
Yes I'm a K-12 teacher, and at this point I am looking for teaching jobs at both international schools and teaching English in a TEFL setting.
I've searched for TEFL jobs in Asia through the internet and on this site but never see tefl positions that pay as high as $1800usd? How do I go about finding these jobs?
thanks for your help. |

For K to 12, you should try going to TES or IBO.
For jobs that pay more than $1800 in Asia, you could try TES and IBO as well, as well as the Chronicle, TESOL.org, and HigherEdJobs. There are some countries that pay more than others. Finding a job in China that pays more than $1800 would be tough, but ti's common in places like Japan, Korea (go to the other board), and Taiwan. Also, keep in mind te benefits you'll get. Free housing is great. if you don't get housing, even if you're making more than $1800, a chunk of it may end up going towards housing.
Keep in mind that the jobs that pay more htan $1800 usually require a couple years experience as well as a master degree. |

1st, don't let the initial salary be your only guide when looking at jobs abroad. The other benefits (free housing, airfare, etc) add to the bottom line in a significant way.
In many countries, because of the differences in economies, on a salary of $1800 you will likely be able to live well AND send $1000/mo home to pay off your student loans.
After you get a couple years under your belt and do some networking it is NOT hard to find jobs in Asia that pay up to $30k per year with savings on the order of US$20k or more while still having a very comfortable (upper middle class) lifestyle.
For specific examples:
In China, on a gross salary of $1200 (8000 rmb) plus 2 bedroom apartment (utilities paid), airfare, medical and 2 free meals per day at the school and our savings were close to $800 per month.
In Korea I was earning close to $40k/yr. plus housing, medical and airfare. Family of 3; vacations abroad and a normal, middle class lifestyle. Our savings were in the range of $12-15k per year.
In Thailand now, earning about $30k per year, living well (house, maid, vacations abroad) and saving $20k per year.
When we moved to Thailand my gross salary dropped by $10k but because of the differences in the economies our lifestyle went up (3 bedroom house with maid instead of a 50m2 apartment) AND our savings increased from $15 to $20k per year.

That's right, you have to factor in benefits. LIke TOm says, you could save more on a lower salary if you're given more benefits and the country has a low cost of living. |

There are lots of K-12 teaching jobs in the Middle East! Granted, you do need 2 years of teaching experience for many of them, but some schools are happy to take on a brand new teacher. These may not necessarily be the best schools in the region, but they still offer you the opportunity to develop your teaching skills and pay off debts or save some serious $$$! Another way to find out about international school jobs is to register with Search Associates. They have a lot of great jobs on their site. Best of luck with your job search. |

Hello, juno87, and welcome!
Good useful info on this thread, but for further replies to your first question, you might want to post in the "General Middle East Forum."
Good Luck,
