Hi,
I have an offer from Shinas College of Technology. I am thinking about accepting it. VS has made Oman seem like a place I would enjoy.
My question is what are the rental prices like? I would like to be as close as I can be to the school. Yes, I know there is nothing there. I have no problem with that. I can always drive to wherever I want to go. I lived in Fujariah UAE and there was nothing there either.
I would be looking for a 3 bedroom or small villa.
Thanks in advance |

Hey Lynnknows While I loved Oman, I must say that I wouldn't have considered Shinas. I think it is even smaller than Fujairah... but you know what you are getting into. I assume that you have done a search here on this branch of the Oman colleges. There have been loads of problems over the past few years, so be ready.
Are all of your kids out of school? I don't think that the school situation there is good, so check that out too if you haven't already.
Good Luck... hope someone will drop in with specific rental info.

Thanks VS,
I really enjoy small towns. Living in small towns helps me save money, LOL. No, seriously, I like to visit bigger cities but have no real interest in living in them. If I take this position I will be close to Sohar. I can go there to do whatever. I have a friend living in Ibra, so we can meet up in Muscut and do the city thing. I will also be close enough to go to UAE if I really want to do things bigger.
I am sure this school, like all school, has its issues. I am not sure what THIS branch has going on but I pray it is no worse than any other.
My kids do an online program from Texas Tech. It gives me more work to do but they are my greatest investment. I cant complain about the time I put into them if I want them to be of value to the world and their self. I tried the International schools and have not be happy with them. They either have low standards or they are too much like being in a public school back in the States. My oldest is in college so she is OK.
I hope someone, anyone that lives in the area will leave a comment.
Thanks again |

Most teachers who work in Shinas live in Sohar and commute. About 30min each way. A villa would probably run in the 200-250 range but maybe cheaper the further from the beach it is. Sohar area would be a good location for someone with kids because there are a fair few westerners with children there and it is quite nice.
Shinas has absolutely nothing in it. I mean nothing!!!
As terms of working, every place has its ups and downs. No major or serious complaints from teachers I know there just normal things that are everywhere. |
