Has anyone out there had experience with any of the overseas programs offered by companies like TEFL International, ITTT, LanguageCorps, etc.? I live in Seattle and I was originally planning to get my certification from a local school (The School of Teaching ESL). But if I could do a comparable month long intensive course in, say, Thailand, that would be my preference.

Are these reputable companies? Are their programs good? Any input would be most welcome. And as always, wherever you are in the world, I wish you well!

Oh, and in case it's relevant, I am a 41 year old American guy with a degree in English Literature.

CELTA, Trinity, and SIT are the most recognised, so you might want to get one from one of those providers.

That being said, there are tons of generic courses out there. IF they have 120 (some say 100 is ok) hours plus another 6 of teaching, they shoudl be ok.

Got the degree and US passport = head out and try it.

AFTER you decide you want to stay in it for a while you can pick the TESOL course that best suits your budget and requirements.

I am NOT a big fan of blanket endorsing programs like the CELTA, Trinity, SIT TESOL since they are primarily directed at teaching adults and the BULK of teaching in Asia is to children (and completely different from teaching adults).

Do you happen to know any that are aimed at teaching kids? Other than the add-ons, such as YL?

nope... which is why I suggest try it and then make a decision.

Spending US$2k for a CELTA to teach kids is meaningless and a waste of money unless you are going to do the YL add-on ASAP and most don't.
(kind of pointless to get a degree in anthropology if you are going to be doing computer programming (about the same difference as teaching kids and adults)).

It is too bad that Cambridge dropped the YL course due to lack of demand (everyone thinks (hopes?) they will teach adults and a LARGE percentage never do).

Someone really should open a course aimed at teaching kids.

Go with the course that is reviewed a lot online and get in contact with graduates of the program. It's funny because I think of CELTA as being generic. The schools that offer CELTA are widely different from each other.

If you are set on a CELTA, you have to research the specific school that is offering the CELTA and see how they are different. There are tons of things that Cambridge does not monitor for. You need to find out what the actual course you want to attend is offering. For example, some courses might give a bunch of extras, job assistance, post course contact...etc Others might only give you the basics. Research the specific school you want to attend.

Cheers,
Chris W
