Is it safe? Cheaper than central Jakarta? Anything you could tell me about the area would be helpful.

Right on the edge of "central" Jakarta I guess. Central Jakarta is potentially a huge area, Kebon Jeruk is a short drive from main city sights. It is congested and the air quality is terrible, apart from that very close to all the big city craziness you desire Smile

I'd add to Fishy's comment that Kebon Jeruk is a generally upmarket area. It's close to Taman Anggrek Mall which has all mod con shopping, restaurants and a very good gym. There's also a rather pleasant 2/3 olympic size swimming pool which attracts families during the afternoon, but is suitable for laps in the morning.
