|
|
Hi! I'm new to this site. My husband, myself and our two boys will be moving to the Cuernavaca area this time next year. I am planning on teaching English but when I google ESL schools in Cuernavaca, the results are overwhelming! I'm taking a trip there in a few weeks and would like to make some initial contact with a few good schools while I'm there but I don't want to pick places at random from the internet! Does anyone have any good (or bad) experiences to share with regard to ESL schools in the area? I'd appreciate ANY info.! Thanks! |

What are your qualifications?
I know someone who worked at the ITESM Cuenavaca campus. She enjoyed the working environment and it was very well paid, but had some problems with the students. Rich youth who had been raised to believe the world was at their service. |

I completed an 4 week intensive TESOL certificate course offered by World Learning SIT Graduate Institute last summer. I will be volunteering this summer to help teach ESL classes but I do not hold a Bachelors degree. The situation you're describing, at least as it pertains to the students, is one that I'm hoping to avoid. Well paid would obviously be nice but not at any expense! I'd really like to find a nice community. I'm not familiar with the abbreviation ITESM. What is that? Thanks for the response by the way! |

Lack of a bachelor's may present a problem. Advanced education is highly regarded in Mexico, and you are likely to be asked to supply a resume listing your educational background. A bachelor's will be expected in public schools and universities, but perhaps not in the smaller language schools. |

ITESM is the Instituto Tecnologico de Educacion Superior de Monterrey, also know as the Tec de Monterrey. Not having a Master's degree disqualifies you from working there. I believe Cuernavaca has all the usually language school chains.
Are you moving there because of your husband's work or family ties?
If so your best bet is to probably use those ties to make connections to give private lessons. A lucrative area is children's teaching. If you are very organized teaching groups of kids for a hour at a time can be quite fun and if you get a group of 8 to 12, you can charge a low fee for each kid and still get a high hourly rate. Your children's school will be a good place to find students for such a class. I can hardly walk in my children's school building without being asked by someone if I can give classes to their kids. |

I too am moving to Cuernavaca soon, looks like December of this year. I have a 120hr online TEFL certificate and a Bachelor's Degree. I do not have any ESL teaching experience, but feel confident in my transferable skills from other jobs held. ANY school ideas would be greatly appreciated |

Out of curiosity, what jobs have you held that you feel will help you be a good English teacher? |

The only thing that helps you teach ESL is training, and teaching ESL. I taught children for 5 years, and have a degree in Education, but neither of those helped me at all with teaching ESL. If at all possible try to at least do some volunteer teaching so you have an idea what you are doing before you step into the classroom. |
