I just had an American friend of mine beg me not to go to Mexico City; "they're chopping heads off out there!". I did just laugh it all off but it is dangerous, isn't it?
I've lived in Phnom Penh where some people were afraid to visit and it was nothing but something tells me DF is quite a lot more badass.
How dangerous is it really? Is it like all your friends have stories of robberies and muggings? Is it mostly theft or do people get beaten up? I don't like people punching my face; I have a beautiful face. |

Oh, for crying out loud! Don't listen to your American friend who obviously has no idea what life is like in Mexico City. It is true that the evil drug gangs have killed people by cutting off their heads, but nothing like that is happening here. You must keep in mind that many Americans are geographically-impaired and have no idea how big Mexico is and that the border (where most of the bad stuff is happening) is far, far away from the middle of the country, where Mexico City is located. In fact, these days, Mexico City is one of the safest parts of the country to live in.
I've been here for almost four years and have never felt in danger. In fact, I feel much safer here than I did living in New York City and Philadelphia in the years before I moved here in 2007. I am an older single woman who lives alone and gets around the city on foot or on public transportation. Since I moved here, several friends have come to visit and had a wonderful time in this city and other parts of the country. No problems, no muggings, no robberies and absolutely no decapitations! |

They are trying to coral all the security/safety topics into the sticky at the top of the page...start reading there.

Opinions vary. Mine after 11 years here is that it is safe. Car theft and robberies are the main crimes here. |

Is there some way to transfer this new thread to the sticky? |

I don't live there but I've been there a number of times. It certainly feels a little more dangerous than other parts of Mexico but take all the big city precautions and you'll be alright. It's well worth the 'risk' too. |
