Hi everyone, I could really use some advice. I am currently teaching at a hagwon for adults in South Korea and will be done with my contract in September. I want to apply for PhD programs back in the USA for September 2012, which means that A) I want to go home for a few months after my current contract, maybe October - December to focus on my applications and B) I don't want to be home for a whole year, so I would ideally like to come back to Asia and do some teaching January through June or July before I start my degree.
I love teaching adults one to one (what I am doing now) and would like to continue with that kind of work if at all possible, and I visited Thailand this February and completely fell in love with it, so I am interested in giving SE Asia a try.
My questions:
--is it realistic to think that I could get a job teaching adults one to one in SE Asia? I don't see anything like this advertised at the moment.
--do any of these jobs come with 6-month rather than 1-year contracts? (I konw, I could break a one-year contract, but I'd rather not have to do that)
I thought perhaps that working for a business directly would give me more flexibility in terms of a shorter contract, and I do have some experience with business English from my current job. But I'd rather do just kind of conversational stuff. I don't have a business background or anything.
I'd also be happy teaching at a university but I doubt that I could get a six-month contract from one.
--which country do ppl recommend (I'm looking for fairly good pay, good conditions, not exorbitant working hours, not horrible visa process, like everyone else I guess. From what I've gathered Vietnam sounds like the best. But I don't really know)
I would even be interested in proofreading or editing stuff rather than teaching-- I don't know if these kinds of jobs exist in SE Asia, though--
My qualifications:
MA in English Literature, 1 yr. part-time ESL tutoring experience in the US, 1 yr. full-time ESL teaching in Korea (adults, 1:1)
Ok, sorry for the long post, and thank in advance for any advice!! |
