Hello everyone,
I've been teaching ESL for 2 1/2 years and feel extremely confident in my lessons. My employers told me that it's silly to spend the time/money to go through the month long course, because the CELTA program will just re-hash everything I've learned through experience.
I want to teach in The Middle East but really don't want to move somewhere for a month to get this expensive certificate. It'd cost a fortune (for me).
Is it possible to get a job in the Middle East with only an online certification |

Starting from September 2011, Cambridge will offer an online version of the CELTA. You will just have to show up for 6 hours of teaching practice at an approved centre; the rest will be delivered online. I guess this would be your best bet, as you would get the same certificate without incurring the costs of travel and lodging. Other than this, I'd say don't waste your time (or money) for an online tefl certificate that does not have any face-to-face component, because they are not recognised by employers in the Middle East.
That being said, the CELTA itself is not enough if you want to work for one of the better employers. Normally you need a relevant MA and 2 years of post-qual. experience. |

Yes, but the employer you will work at will not pay or treat you at all like you might hope. You might have poor living conditions, short holidays, and a less than congenial employer that gives late pay, shorts pay or mucks around with things that are important to you.

Dear Madhatter,
I would not recommend trying to gain employment in KSA with only a CELTA - let alone another online certificate. Having said that it obviously depends on your personal situation (i.e married or single). What is your motivation for wanting to go to KSA? If it is religious then of course it is easier to put up with any hardship(s) that you may face. With that in mind please feel free to send me a private message so that we can better discuss KSA employment prospects.
I feel it pertinent to mention that having obtained the CELTA a considerable number of years ago I then went on to teach in KSA for a period of four years. This whilst not having an undergraduate degree or masters in TEFL. It has been a year now since I have returned back to the UK. I am therefore well placed to advise you on your prospects or lack thereof of employment.
