I have been teaching abroad and in American universities for 25 years. I've got a BA and MA in English, I'm TEFL certified, and I'm currently working on a Ph.D at a well-known university where I also teach and have a small but significant administrative post. I will be ABD soon and am thinking of taking a year or two abroad to teach before finishing up the dissertation. I have Omani friends in the States who have recommended their country as a place to land a teaching post.

I have a great resume and excellent references, but I also have a conviction for driving under the influence a few years back. This had no effect on my employment with my current institution, but I understand that these days more and more countries are no longer granting work visas to people who have been convicted of a crime--and this is a misdemeanor. I'm ashamed of this incident (after a late-night holiday party) and have completely purged myself of the spirits, both liquid and festive, which got me pulled over that night.

Since then I've continued to build an impressive instructional and academic career and have distinguished myself as a responsible, invested professional. I wonder, though, if this incident, which will show up on a regular background check, will prevent me from getting a work visa in certain countries (as is the case in Korea and Japan). So I'm wondering: would it keep me from getting a teaching post in Oman?

Your feedback and suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks so much for taking the time to read my post.

I am pretty sure only the military jobs require a background check. I know the ministry/agency jobs do not. As there are/were ex-cons working with them.

Perhaps before wasting your time go direct to one of the best sources, the Royal Oman Police for the correct information:
