Hi, I'm new to this site and and would post this on the "newbie" forum but this is more for those of you who have experience at this... I also would try to post this on the Korea Forum but for some reason can't logon to that. By the way - Does anyone know if you have to have a separate login and password for the Korea Forum?
Anyway, I've been researching teaching in South Korea for the past few weeks and am feeling completely overwhelmed. It seems like when I go to research schools they are all on one blacklist or another and all I read are negative things people have to say about teaching and finding a school. I am very interested in doing this but feel like I need some sort of guidance.
Can anyone recommend some good schools? I've searched for white lists but am skeptical b/c I don't know if a school can post themselves. The last thing I want is to end up with a contract that is not honored and find myself in a bad situation. I'm willing to do my homework but would like some recommendations from people who are experienced with this. I am most interested in teaching in Seoul...most likely in September.
Thanks for your help! I appreciate it. |

FYI the Newbie forum is meant for newbies to ask questions and us old codgers to help. Anyone can go there.
In a general way you may want to go for a big language school in Seoul. Once you're offered a job (which will be very easy) ask to speak to a current teacher there. Get their home tel # and then you and they will be able to talk more freely. I had a real lousy employer when i first got to Korea and this could have been averted had I talked to a current teacher. You will never get 100% assurance that a job will work out, but this may help. |

One piece of advice. No matter what people tell you, you MUST do your own homework and base decisions you make on that. Take other's opinions into account sure, but don't do something because someone else says it is a good idea. DOing homework in this business is not just what students do - teachers need to do a lot of it too!
Also ( I guess this is a second piece but I promise no more after that), you will make some mistakes somewhere along the line and regret something. HOmework just helps to make these teensy weensy ones instead of life stopping clangers. Don't be afraid of difficulties - they will make you in the end and we've all been through them. You'll see that from the Korean forum straight away!
Say hi to all my friends from Columbus Ohio who I plan to see this Christmas... |

Thanks Gordon and shmooj. I'll take your advice to heart. I've actually met someone back here in Ohio who used to teach with his wife in Seoul. He said they really enjoyed it and has recommended his school to me and even contacted them to see if they have any openings. I plan to find out a bit more about the school and go from there.
And shmooj, Columbus is finally hitting Spring...beautiful day today - sunny and 70 degrees... ...but, knowing this state, it'll probably snow tomorrow. |
