This wont interest our friends from New York or California but there does seem to be a feeling that certain European countries could soon be digging out their old drachmas, escudos, punts and even pesetas! One unkind commentator recently said that the PIGS, as they are known, deserved the acronym since they had had their snouts in the trough for years. Any economists reading this?

I'm not an economist, but I sometimes play one in the classroom Cool

The general concensus here so far (I mean in our Economics faculty, in a highly reputable European university) is that the Euro is likely to survive, though there are probably some tough times ahead.

I can couch it in more economical terms, and go into (a bit) more detail, but overall, the Euro still looks like a reasonable bet for the future, according to my colleagues, who are real Economists Very Happy

The euro is an essential part of the Soviet plan for the Evropeiski Soyuz. It will not fail. The system works.

Who knows what will happen to various currencies? I do however convert spare cash to physical gold and silver bullion. All paper currencies fail eventually, we just don't know the timing.

I'm start my first job in China soon, I will investigate the possibility of purchasing gold and silver coins from the bank with my spare cash.

They must have had a plan when they started the euro. Sure, there are problems now, but all currencies have issues. Soemtimes they get revamped and often get the name "new" stuck in front of them, but with all the countries dependent on one, it shouldn't be too bad.

Yes, plans. Basically:

The euro was established by the provisions in the 1992 Maastricht Treaty. To participate in the currency, Member States are meant to meet strict criteria, such as a budget deficit of less than three per cent of their GDP, a debt ratio of less than sixty per cent of GDP, low inflation, and interest rates close to the EU average.

I'm sure the Germans will be really happy to bail out Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy.

Invasions these days are more likely to be done by the agents of the Military-Industrial Complex in Washington, DC !

They only went peacenik after the Motherland invaded them good and proper.

By the way, the 22 of June is the 70th anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War...

Dear Isla Guapa,

"I wonder who will take over when the US bows out?"

My money's on Liechtenstein. They're admittedly small, but they're fierce.
And they're way overdo for world domination.

Regards,
John
