Hello,

I'm a CELTA holder with a Bachelor's degree, teaching at International House in Colombia. I'm thinking of working here until the end of the year, at which point I will have about 2 year's teaching experience, and then getting a Masters in order to teach in reputable, good paying Universities in Mexico.

There are Masters in TEFL for adults, but I'm thinking of getting a Masters that would also help for finding work in public schools in the USA, ie a K-12 degree.

Is anyone working in Universities in Mexico with such a K-12 Education degree in English? Would there be a definite advantage when applying to University jobs in Mexico in having a Masters TEFL for Adults, or do they simply want to see a Masters in something related to English education?

I know people with Masters in Education here, but they are of the K-12 variety, and they have been successful in finding work in non-University settings, but I don't know anyone actually teaching in a University.

Thanks for the help,
Jacob

Youd probably be better off teaching in an international school, with a teaching credential from your home country, than teacher TEFL, if money is a big part of what you are interested in. There are some decent paying University Jobs as well, but they are often outside of big cities, so there isnt a lot to do, if they is a concern. International schools generally pay more than Universities anyway.

I would go for the K-12 certification. You just never know where life might take you and it would be more versitile. Something may happen and you may find yourself back in the US looking for work. You can certainly use it to teach young adults--teaching first year university students is not at all unlike teaching high school. I mean, it's not like they cross some magic line at high school graduation and are suddenly mature.
The hiring committee my the Mexican university where I work wouldn't distinguish between an MA in TEFL with or without a K-12 certification aspect to it.
