Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about the tax situation for foreigners in Spain. I've been working as an English teacher for a small school in the outskirts in Madrid since October last year and are considering to stay there for at least one more year. Although the school's classrooms are quite small and have no natural light, I like the tranquility of living outside Madrid, and have got used to taking a 30 minute busride every time I want to see a film or go for some drinks in a halfway decent bar. Anyway, now I need to know how high a salary I should negotiate in order not to actually earn less than what I am making at this moment, when I have to pay thousands of Euros of tax.
Currently, I do not (yet) have a NIE number and therefore my contractual situation is somewhat unclear. I get about 600 Euros on my bankaccount and the rest, 800 E, in cash, for about 30 hours a week. What I've been told is that the first year is actually tax-free in Spain, but after that I have to start declaring my income. Does anybody know what kind of percentage I can expect to hand over to the tax authorities? I find the whole thing a bit hard to understand as normally the company you work for would pay tax for you and what you get at the end of the month is really yours. My boss told me that she is not sure herself, and that she is going to ask someone, but that that was over three months ago...
I do not work as a free-lancer; my contract was only made for the current schoolyear. I hold an EU passport and have no other income than from this job.
Any info on this matter would be greatly appreciated. |
