Hi all,
As a newbie on the forums I'm looking for teachers who have taught in the above area or are currently teaching in the area.
I've accepted a short term contract (9 months) to teach in the area and would be keen to hear from teachers who have had experiences in Santiago or the North in general, in terms of teaching conditions and living costs.
Having done a lot of research I've been told I should expect to pay around 300-400 euros for an apartment in the area or roughly half this if sharing with others- Does this sound accurate and have been told it's much cheaper than the South.
Any extra info would be really appreciated |

I'm in Asturias, which is just East of Galicia. I like everything about the school and the place in general apart from one big sticking point...the weather! Far too similar to Scotland for me. |

Hi,
Congratulations on your job. We are in North Portugal and are hoping to move to Galicia, since the economy is going down the pan. If you don`t mind me asking did you job hunt in person or through various web sites. We have friends in Santiago and the area is quite nice.
Thanks,

Hey,
I applied through a website and then I met the company at Spainwise job fair in Cordoba to sign the pre contract agreement and have an opportunity to ask any other questions I hadn't asked in the two telephone interviews. |

Galiza non Espaa! Galicia wants to have a level of freedom from Spain similar to that in other regions.
It rains a lot, the seafood is amazing, and the Atlantic Islands off Vigo have, according to The Guardian, the most beautiful beaches in the world.
I am envious of you going there to work. |

I studied in Santiago for 4 months in 2008. Incredible place I would recommend it thoroughly to live for a while.
It rains a lot, everyday in February when I was there.
But people get on with it and you can have fun borrowing other people's umbrellas from cafes and bars.
I was paying 320 euros for a very small interior room on the frontier between old and new towns. In hindsight I was probably paying quite a lot for what it was, however it was arranged before I got there and was happy to take it, being my first experience living abroad. Plus my flatmate was great.
It can be very cheap as the tapas culture is extremely generous in many bars in the old town. I rarely had formal diner. If you enjoy drinking, this can also be done very cheaply in establishments serving their own home brewed wine served in porcelain cups.
Lots of students and pilgrims, and with a stunning old town you can't go far wrong with Santi! If you can find a job there that is |

Yeah I have a job lined up so I'm quite looking forward to it.
My salary is 1000 euros a month which I'm ok with given I don't smoke or drink. I'm hoping I could share a flat to save money which I've been assured is more than possible.
I'm hoping the job will give me a good opportunity to experience living abroad for the first time and improve my Spanish which is dreadful |

I wonder if you'll pick up some gallego along the way too. |

Yes. Pick up a gallego or a gallega! Spains free and easy these days. Depends on your taste, I suppose.
Saludos cario! |
