I have just begun looking at the Middle East as an option.

I am female / 30
B.S. Psychology
1 year teaching experience abraod
CELTA Certified

To work in the Middle East do you need to be a certified school teacher? What kind of jobs should I look for if it would be possible for me?

Thanks!

This has been asked many times before - I wonder if a sticky would be a good idea? It seems that lots of basically-qualified teachers are dreaming of well-paid ME jobs these days....

(Pardon my intrusion - I'm not the best-qualified to answer this question because I'm answering based on what I've been told, rather than what I know from personal experience. What I've understood for the past few years is that, without a related MA + experience, it's unlikely that a teacher will find a decent job in the ME - correct, experts?).

Here's one recent post that discusses the issue in some detail:

Your credentials are VERY marginal. You might be able to get a job, but chances are very high that it is a place that you wouldn't recommend for your worst enemy. Laughing

The Middle East has high pay because they can demand top credentials. To teach in the universities, a related MA is required at the better places. To teach at the K-12 schools with good pay and conditions, you need a current teaching certificate/license from your home country.

Normally at this point I would suggest that with your credentials you might want to look at places like Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, or Jordan - especially if a high income isn't your main goal. If you added a couple of years teaching Arabic speakers, you might open some further doors. But, things are a bit unstable in these countries right now. So, unless you are the adventurous type, you might not be interested.

Females need higher qualifications than mnles. If you were a male, I would say that you could probably find something.

This is mainly true in Saudi where there are many more jobs for men than women. Not as true in the rest of the Gulf.
