I'm a long time Dave's lurker, but I have to get this off my chest, or I'll explode. You people will understand:

I'm the DOS at a school here in China, and we have a Canadian guy here, older, came to restart his loser life, and the problem is that he knows how to fly just under the radar.

He will make comments about the Chinese, almost racist, like, "they can't organize their way out of a paper bag."

He makes comments about female students that are almost obscene. The gross part is the age (middle school) of the students he leers at.

He is a fast talker, made friends with the school owner (they both drink to excess every day) and is beyond my control. Always has a complaint. Never happy unless drunk.

Hates me because I went to University ("I'm self-educated") and am younger than him and his boss.

I know there is nothing that can be done. I don't expect anyone to reply to this posting. I took this job so that I would, in the future be able to work in a real school with real teachers.

I just needed to get this off my chest so that I dont Kung-Fu him the next time he comes into my office and tells me he doesn't want to do something that is in his contract.

Ahhhhh, much better now......

It would seem that your older teacher has more China smarts than you do.

Developing a rapport with people in power and "drinking" with them is what its all about in China. Your concerns stem from your own insecurity about your role in the school. A DOS in China is merely a western puppet used to mask the real authority behind the school - that of the owner. You should try developing a little Guan Xi for yourself!

I vote that the owner has employed a dud of a DOS who does not understand how organisations function in the PRC. Keep the teacher - drop the DOS!

(In fact - be prepared! That is probably what will happen - you dope!)

OUCH!

I do have to admit that your assertions about this "loser" do appear a bit tenuous. They may be warranted, but you haven't really given us anything to work with.

This is why I love Dave's: I get to rant and can go in to work with a smile. I mean, for all I know, Retro is this very teacher I'm typing about.

(at least Philolinguist is on the square)

Ok, Slim and Retro, Teachers vs. Managemet. BRING IT ON

here goes:

This teacher will be stuck in this place he hates (except for the under-age girls he wants to sleep with) while I, the "Puppet" already have a better job offer in Japan that I will take. He hates me, hates the school owner for not managing up to his standards (still gets drunk with him, but complains about him to me), hates the girls that won't sleep with him, hates himself, but WON'T LEAVE.

I have a feeling that Retro and Slim are attacking me because they see this teacher in themselves. They attack because I am serious, I do my job, I have a copy of my contract ON MY DESK that I follow as if it were the Bible, and they know that in ten years I will be opening my own chain of schools and making money while they will be on the same bar stool, leering at the same little girls and whining about the next young, ambitious, DOS that is telling their sorry little butts to quit whining about their hangover and and prep for the class.

*whew*! I feel SO much better now.

Ok, FLAME ON ! ! ! !

He's just one of the types who comes to China because he can get away with stuff here in China that he couldn't get away with back home.

I'm glad someone brought up the subject of foreign COLLEAGUES in China. I've been wondering about how westerners (Americans, British, Australians, New Zealanders, maybe Irish if they are allowed to TEFL) get along with others.

I mean, I have observed some antics in the workplace in China between the British DOS and his British vice-DOS and an Irish teacher. The British fellow would say stuff like, " Irish people drink loads of Guinness. That's Irish people as opposed to pigs".

I've watched with interest too, the British DOS dealing with a Nigerian teacher in China. The British DOS would say, "make a sentence with 'stupid' and 'can't speak English'.

The British DOS was straight with Canadians, Americans and Australians. I haven't seen the Brit interact with New Zealanders.

No - sorry retro is not the focus of your rantings.

And no - I am not a "loser", alcoholic or misfit. I simply recognise bad management when I see it.

My support goes to the "teacher". As for your "I will own my own school" rantings - still pie in the sky. Really - you can't boast about somethingyou have yet to achieve. I'd say say your a complete "}{*&^ and few people would want to work with you if given the choice.

Go teacher, go!
