I am thinking of applying for a technology teaching position at IAT.
Anyone has an updated figure of their salary and housing allowance scale these days? Is there any difference between Abu Dhabi and Dubai Housing allowance?

The figures are grim, I believe. Less than 15k per month salary and an equally poor housing allowance. School fee subsidy was about 40k per year for TWO kids!!

There are better places around than IAT. Just make sure you avoid Kaplan too!

Very very grim. Would be very lucky to get 15. Latest max was 13600, housing allowance depends on location. About 9 a month single and 11 for family in Abu Dhabi. Only flight for 1 dependant and think about 60 max for education. This is not a good place to work. The HR is a mess .

13.6 + 11 = 24.6k. This is not so bad.
I wonder if the housing allowance is the same in Dubai.
Is it possible to negotiate and get a higher salary if you have masters and several years of teaching experience in the region?

I have heard nothing positive about IAT. The lack of respect for teachers is reprehensible. I believe the term 'factory worker' comes into play. I'm still waiting to hear more about KIC. Also, I heard they are just as bad.

The 13K is for a PhD with over 20 years experience. Most of the Kaplan teachers are on 10 - 12000 with 9000 accomodation and they are struggling financially to get set up in accomodation and to acquire furniture.

Yes, that is correct. Not to mention, the accommodation in the Emirates is very expensive, and you only get tile and concrete. They give you an accommodation allowance, but if you leave early (and you will) they will make you pay the full amount back. Regardless, how long you have stayed.
Then you have to find your own flat, but Kaplan doesn't want to get a bad rap as if they haven't helped you in some way, so they will take you out and show you the pricey ones. The management has no managing skills. They basically are a regime to be avoided. Imperialism comes to mind. Stay away from IAT and especially Kaplan. They don't call it "KRAPLAN" for nothing!

Actually, JCB, the term is 'KRAPLAND'! I hate to be a pedant here (really, I do) but it's an important distinction.

Working for them, one enters an entire country by itself, in which teachers are treated more like expendable slaves than a valuable human resource.

No, it's essential to avoid Krapland and IAT, unless you're extremely desperate for employment.

wow, so there is somewhere out there worse than HCT.

ZU is almost impossible to get into like an exclusive private golf club, ya gotta wait for someone to kick the bucket and have your wasta working.

UAEU/UGRU good gig but living on borrowed time.

What about Abu Dhabi University? Ain't heard much about that place, good or bad.

I read recently that all the state uni/colleges are having their budgets tagged back to 2008 levels with HCT being the hardest hit..................how long till this bubble finally bursts?

I had a job offer two years ago and my cousin worked there. They really work you, long hours, many classes. Not a place you'd want to work if you had a choice.

Might be worth it if you are single or have a small family, because the tuition allowance won't go far in the UAE.

You can look forward to this...

1. Housing Allowance: Abu Dhabi is very expensive. You will be lucky if you can find a decent place to live with the amount they give you.

2. There is a compulsory 6 month probationary period which can be extended at the dicretion of management. This will effect your annual ticket allowance and repatriation.

3. You will work 40 hours per week. You will not receive payment for overtime or extended hours worked, nor is there any other type of compensation. They carefully word this section, by saying, generally there is a 5 day work week or as dictated by certain requirments.

4. You will not receive airfare during the probationary period. If you are hired after September this will be a problem for you.

5. You will be given 40 work days off. However, it is at the establishment's discretion how they will give it you. More than likely, it will be split up rather than 40 consecutive days.

6. If you decide to end your contract within the probationary period, you will not receive airfare.

7. There is a list of conduct rules. If you break any of these rules they can fire you immediately without compensation and take legal action against you. What is disturbing about this clause, it doesn't seem to apply to management. Such as cooperating with colleagues, peform duties with expertise and develop job skills.
