Does anyone know the current rate for an MA and also what a good housing allowance is? I have been offered
Salary: 13000.00 SAR per month
Accommodation: 3250 per month SAR per month
Transport: 1300 per month SAR per month

Is this a low ball offer? Should one try to negotiate when they make an offer like this? I have no idea what the going rate is in KSA. Thanks for any help.

This is low, you should be able to do better! Non MA holders are getting that.
Accomodation is 2,000 - 5,000 SAR per month for furnished apts, transportation (taxi) generally 5-15 SAR each trip if shared.

Field-related MA (TESL/TEFL or Applied Linguistics) or other?

This is reasonable if your MA is not related to TESOL or linguistics. If related MA, you should be making 14 to 15k base salary.

Everybody here says Saudi universities are still offering typically 13,000 to start.

Dear Badar Bin Bada Boom.

"Everybody here says Saudi universities are still offering typically 13,000 to start."

Is that with an MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistics and a few years overseas experience?

Regards,
John

I've just signed an offer from a Riyadh uni for a little over 15K per month, which includes all monthly allowances (i.e., this is what would be deposited into my acct each month). Housing is included, so no extra allowance for that. I have an MA in TESOL, 4 yrs experience at tertiary level (post-MA) including 3 here in the Kingdom. BTW, I'm a "white" male from North America. Draw your own conclusions... Cheers. Smile

If you have an MA + 4 years... most with Arabic speakers, why not head to Qatar or the UAE? Even at QU you could get more per month PLUS furnished housing.

A colleague who has several years teaching experience in KSA, has been offered under 9000 SR by a few universities (direct hire). He has recently completed an MA and therefore does not have any post MA experience.

He was apparently earning more prior to taking a year out to study for his MA. Has the market become more competitive, or has he been unfortunate?

If you have got an MA, they don't take your pre-MA experience into consideration when calculating the salary. So 9000 SR is what they pay to somebody with an MA but no experience.

This depends very much on the employer and your experience. A friend of mine finished an MA a couple years back, and headed to the TESOL conference in the US. Application was made to the top 5 or 6 employers in the UAE, Qatar, & Oman. Every one of them offered a position. The lowest was in Oman... and the offer accepted was in the UAE for the equivalent of $5100 a month plus an excellent housing/benefit package. Prior experience was mostly with Arabic speaking students in International Schools.

BTW... it was an online degree...
