Hello...

can anyone offer advice on ways to find teaching jobs in Dubai? I'm looking now but not ready to move til mid-Jan 2012.
does anyone know any websites? or agents? or other?

Am looking into either ESL or English literature. my qualifications are a BA (Eng Lit), MA (Drama), CELTA, and 5 years plus tertiary teaching experience.

thank you!!

If you do a quick search you'll find you don't qualify for the better (benefits and proper docs), more stable (pay on time and in full) positions. If you have a teaching cert K-12 from your home country you could be well placed for the better international schools.

Truth is, there are those with better quals (related MA plus at least 3 years post grad related experience) who are also looking - should you apply? Yes, and directly, visit the websites of those institutions cited on what you find in your search of these forums - the only reputable employer I'm aware of that uses a recruiter currently is ADEC. 99.9% of UAE employers do not use recruiters.

You DO NEED the valid docs to work in UAE - any employer who tries to tell you otherwise is going to abuse you.

I see. In some countries they are ok with the MA being in drama...but seems like not so much the case in the UAE.

do you know if there are many English Literature type teaching jobs around? "academics" they call it in some places...

Most reputable tertiary institutions require (and get) related MAs +3 yrs of post grad experience. By reputable, those that pay in full on time, benefits plus proper documents. Are you employable, yes. But you may not get offered all of the above and the GCC is not a place to try and work without proper documentation at the very minimum.

I don't know of any GCC country that would considner and MA in drama and a celta as being equivalent to the above.

Lulu29:

To best market yourself to prospective employers, you may want to emphasize that drama is all about expressing oneself and that drama activities---both spoken and written---can successfully be incorporated into language learning to build the students' creativity, motivation, and confidence. Look at those aspects of your theater degree that are easily transferable to EFL. But don't just limit yourself to the UAE. In fact, I suggest you check out the Community College of Qatar under the Houston Community College System.

Good luck!

The Houston CC system must be about 15 campuses at least, most with ESL needs, and one particular "campus" (a building) is devoted solely to ESL classes for about 250 students. They're had the same lousy boss for a couple of decades, but then almost all ESL/EFL administrators everywhere are extraordinarily bad. The Houston area has two or three other CC districts in addition to Houston proper. And...lots of part-timers waiting in the wings for years and years.

None of the Uni's that I know of in the UAE have English Lit programs. YOu might be able to get a position, but I am not knowledgeable about them.

The only places where English Lit would be an option would be the International Schools where they would need an English Lit teacher for the A A/S and IGCSE level english. But many of those positions require a valid teaching license in your home country. YOu can check and see, but that is a lot of footwork on your part to find those schools.
