Hello All!
I am still seeing a lot of posts for teachers, however, I am not getting many responses as of yet. I have a BA but no TEFL or formal experience aside form 5 plus years tutoring and working with kids in group homes, children's hospitals and shelters etc. My question is: Would I be taking a giant leap of faith if I don't have any interviews lined up for August and just come over anyway? Are all of the teaching positions generally filled by then? I am just reading stories from far more qualified teachers who aren't getting responses either so that is worrisome. I am planning on arriving in mid August . I'm not super picky about where, and actually think I would prefer Taichung or somewhere else outside Taipei.
Your wisdom is appreciated! |

The Internet is a great resource, but it's not the only one.
It is best to search for a job once you're here. That didn't make much sense to me either before I came to Taiwan, but you will see the wisdom of it once you're here and start making contacts.
Don't worry about all the jobs "filling up", work has always been available throughout the year. There has been more competition since the US economy went down the toilet, and yet I still have no problem finding work (changed jobs last month). Also, if you focus on the places everyone wants to be, you will find more competition.
Finally, Taiwanese generally do not do any forward planning. In other words, most employers wait until they are desperate and want you to start immediately. Even those that advertise in June for positions starting in August or September are likely to wait until August or September before actually hiring. |

Thank you so much Zoidberg! Big fan by the way : ) Do you think that arriving in early Sept. would be cutting it way too close? What part of Taiwan do you live in?
Thank you again, you have eased some of my anxiety. |
