Hi, everyone.
I've been asked for my cedula profesional, as I've always asked for them from doctors and accountants. I'm very familiar with what it is, but oddly enough I don't actually know if I have one. They're issued with your degree, correct? And since I have my degree from the US, I don't have one, right? I've never even considered this before. |

No, you don't have one, and frankly getting one would be a major PIA (I believe phreddy has one?) and I would only go through the processes if the job it got me was VERY good! |

I have one, since I went to college in the US, I needed it once for a job, but if you explain that your degree is from the US, perhaps they will take it. Unless you want to work for the SEP, they wont. It is a major, major PITA, so unless you are getting something really, really good in return, I would just take a pass. |

I don't have one but I once inquired about what it would take to get one. And like everyone said, it's a major pain. Involves apostilles (I don't even have my degrees apostilled), getting official translations of all your educational documents (down to high school level), and then more bureaucratic paperwork through SEP to have everything validated and get its equivalency to Mexican educational documents. I've only had one job here in Mexico and they've never asked me for a cedula, and frankly, all the advertised jobs I've seen that required it paid so low I haven't seen it being worthwhile to go through all that hassle. |

I wonder why poorly-paying jobs may require the cdula and the better-paying ones don't. |

I dont think it is always the pay that determines if they are asking for it, but rather WHO is doing the hiring. And while SEP jobs are not known for spectaular pay, they are known for spectacular benefits. Just today I saw a job that asked for a cedula profesional, or equivilent, though they didnt specify what the equivilent would be. The last couple of jobs I have had I specified that I had one, and no one was at all interested. Waste of time, unless, like many have said, there are significant goodies attached. |

My theory: the former are targeted to Mexicans, whose proof of education is likely to be a cdula, and not a certification like CELTA or the other ones that foreigners get. |

Thanks everyone for your responses. The job in question is just a few classes at a university and once I mentioned that in lieu of a cedula I had a foreign degree, no more questions were asked. That's that. |
