Hello everyone,

I am currently updating my CV in order to apply for work in Thailand, Singapore or Hong Kong.

I would like some advice on what a good CV should include. Should I try and keep it to 1 A4 side? Should I try and include books I have used and include a photo / references???

Thanks for any advice..

daniel

Photo is cool, but if you are also sending a passport copy then why waste the space? Short is also good, because no-one is going to read a huge wall of text in a foreign language. The general principal I have always gone with is academic quals first, clear chronology of work experience next and then bullet point highlights of the stuff I think is important for that field/job.

In terms of detailed approach or reference to methodology - I suppose you could, but it needs to be punchy rather than "Something anyone could say about liking task based learning".

In short, make it snappy and foreground your credentials.

I have a photo on the top and often send my passport. Why do I do both? My passport photo is horrible, as I'm sure most people's are. Plus, it's old, often employers want a recent photo.

Mine is 2 pages. If you can fill it, that's fine, but don't pad. I think 2 pages should be the max.

I have my personal info at the top, like a photo, address, phone, email, marital status, teaching experience years, degrees, birth date, birth place, all that is about 4 lines.

Then I have my teaching experience, publications, and presentations on the rest of the page. ON the second page I have my education and professional development, like workshops attended, affiliatations, and voluteering at conferences. At the bottom I have three quotes lifted from my references.

I left out books I've used and just write them down and remember them when asked at an interview. If you're looking to fill space, you could put that.

newbie with no relevant work experience (or no work at all):

bio-data and contact information

academic history (reverse chronological order)
uni (place, majors, minors, completion)
high school (place, completion)

other relevant training
academic awards if any

work history (reverse chronological order).
Volunteer work

IF you have a relevant work history or experience, put it AHEAD of your academic history.

Keep it to a maximum of 2 A-4 pages.
Other personal stuff would go in your cover letter.

If all else fails, use the wizard in MS-Word. they do a pretty OK job of assembling a resume for you and you just edit what it spits out to get your finished product.
