Hi,
I am a 24 year old with a Bachelor's Degree looking to teach in Shanghai or Beijing. I do not have the TEFL or CELTA certification. The only program offered in my area is from Oxford Seminars and I have heard it is best to get 120 hours (instead of the 60 Oxford is offering).
Would it be best to go to China and do the training there? Would that give me a better chance on getting placed in a school or should I go on with the Oxford training? I was hoping on moving in January. Thank you. |

If you're looking for qualifications I'd go with either the CELTA or Trinity equivalent. These are the two most recognised qualifications.
Doing courses in the country you are hoping to gain employment can be useful, the school probably has contacts. However, then you have the added cost of supporting yourself for the duration of the course. |

If you believe that a TESOL or CELTA certificate will substitute for class room experience once you get a job, be prepared for a shock.
I wish there were a 180 hour certificate to prepare me to be an orthodontist. |

What I was asking was, is the requirement for 2-years teaching experience rigid, or does it vary from province to province? It's very hard to gauge just from reading about it; what are other people's experiences? |
It varies. I'm not sure if it's province to province or not but I do know it's not as strict in some places. I wouldn't let it worry you too much if you are flexible with location. |
