What % of foreign English teachers in Turkey, in your general perception based on having spoken with others in the field ON THE GROUND in Turkey, do you surmise have legal working papers? Am I wrong to think that its about 33% or less, based on what I have gleaned from various posts here?

I think you are probably right.

I know many teachers in Istanbul and only 1 of them has a work permit and he only got it after teaching for about 3 years. The school wanted to farm him out, but the place where he was to teach required a work permit, so the school broke down and got him one.

If the Turkish government wasn't so sticky with their rules and if they didn't take so long to process, I think more teachers would have them!

I think so. But why change the subject?

They seem to be a LOT easier to get outside Turkey than from within, at least that's the impression I get from the visa website. Not sure how much one will set the average yabanci back, though. Anyone know?

Taking a job without requiring a work visa only perpetuates the problems of abuse in this field. It follows that schools who get around providing work visas will not protect their investment. Without a work visa, as a teacher, you have no legal recourse against poor, unfair working conditions. And I would be hesitant to listen to the complaints of teachers who choose to earn money in Turkey illegally.

yes, i feel if a school are serious about having you and keeping you they will apply for a work visa. Leeds akademi have said only some of the schools (private elem and high schools) on their books will apply for the visa.
i've told them that i dont want to work for a school who are not prepared to protect me and are willing to put me at risk. and surely if they are serious about taking on a teacher for a year they should at least do this.
I may have shot myself in the foot, we will see......

What's with Billy Or and Fox? I got this static from him earlier today. Seems he has a problem with cable news networks. I am poking around this forum more and more and some of the same nom de plumes keep popping up with regular hostility. This inquiry is righteous. This issue of having the proper credentials is never going to go away, so folks had better just go back to school and get their sheepskins. Or you could find some work in Phenom Pen I guess. They don't ask many questions. Not for now anyway.

Billy Orr is a long-time troll, I remember reporting him to the Moderators back in 2006 for some idiotic and abusive behavior, and we can see he is back at the bottle and doing it again. I say have some pity for the guy. Times are tough.

Hmmm, thanks for that I think. I see you contribute quite regularly and seem to keep a sense of perspective. Not territorial at all. Thanks for that. I made the mistake of making a comment before I had done my homework earlier and got some guff. I am going back and reading stuff from before. I have a better handle on what's been going on and may have misspoken earlier.

Laughing billy orr you are too funny! I will answer your rhetorical question even though it was rhetorical. Yes! Shocked Can you believe it? I can.

To answer the OP. The only schools I know of that give work visas are those private K-12 schools. I bet that 33% is correct. I don't see what the big deal is anyway. I've worked with a work permit and without. So what? Every school I worked at paid me, regardless. The only difference for me was having free medical. It was nice to have and saved me a lot of money on visits and prescriptions.
