Regretfully,

I'm writing this out of necessity. Yes, it's an opinion. But many of my colleagues share it.

At our school recently a new manager was hired. He was brought in from the outside.

Since he's taken over, things have deteriorated immensely.

There is open contempt.

There have been recent layoffs as business declines, and the business practices, management style, and over all running of this school is in jeopardy.

The upper management that made this recent hiring decision is hearing the feedback, but will not back down because of (we think) of losing face.

This is a high priced private language school that caters to the "pre-ietls" and "ielts" market.

Will any positive changes be made?

Let me see if I got this straight: you are asking anonymous strangers if positive changes will be made at your unidentified school?

No. You are doomed.

Just kidding. Hard to say, but going off of what you've provided, here are some ideas, and yes, we do need and want to hear more specifics regarding your issue... BTW I have no idea what school the OP is referring to, so I'm just coming from my general base of experience and opinion here...

1) It's Hanoi. It seems more than a few people, including managers, have a hard time finishing their contracts up there. Maybe you'll get lucky and this manager will jump ship. Has there been high turnover in your management? Have you been without a manager for some time? Why do you think that might be?

2) Deterioration. A tricky concept. Why has business declined? What might the decline in business have to do with hiring a new manager, from "outside"? Perhaps the manager is actually on a mission to save the place? I know, I know...managers are evil...I'm just saying though. Maybe the new manager is shaking things up, trying new things, making more rules, paying more attention, or what? Often times what any staff judges as "deterioration" is actually just a transition period, getting to know a new manager, and reacting to policies put in to effect from much higher than the manger. And sometimes, it's employees who have gotten used to being a bit lazy, a bit casual, a bit independent, or a bit "free" reacting to the reinstatement or strengthening of supervision/leadership. Please explain further.

3) Upper management. In general, they will side with the manager. That's just how it works. The lowly staff who outwardly show contempt, who constantly petition UM for changes, will get the sack much sooner than their chosen manager who's been selected to save the day.

We have no idea.

Deteriorate? I would not go that far.

But enrollment is down. Recently, some teachers were let go. Mostly part time. Class size has been increased.

This school in Hanoi is basically the #1 place for pre-ielts and ielts, test prep.

They have a school in HCMC, also.

I could be wrong, but I think know which school you work at as I have taught there as well. I am out of the loop regarding what's going on in Hanoi now, but when I was there the management was very 'hand's off' at this particular school. Don't get me wrong - I loved it!

I did my job and I didn't bother management and they didn't bother me Cool. However, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if there were some teachers there [not talking about you kokonut] who should have been 'bothered'. If enrollments are down it's only to be expected that everyone is under more pressure to perform. Like I said, I don't know what it's like now, but it was very laid-back when I was there and, in some cases from a business point of view, perhaps too much so. Kokonut you are the one 'on the ground' so if you are saying that it is now an unpleasant place to work than I have no reason to disbelieve you, but, if this is indeed the case, all I am saying is that it must have changed heaps Crying or Very sad .

Sgt Welsh,

Good comments.

Enrollment has been declining for a while. Some of the perceived reasons are more schools competing that are considered good, and the school I'm at is expensive in comparison.

Possible economic issues as well, affecting some parental decision on where to study and how much to spend.

As for this comment:

I'm not whinging.

I do not plan on leaving because I've worked long and hard to get where I am at this organization.

The new ingredient may not be around long, so if I leave it would not be worthwhile.

Yes, you are. Take up your issues with your supervisor like an adult.

Think Australia, long-term presence in Vietnam, a leader in IELTS and pre-IELTS in Hanoi.

The school you mention is in Saigon.
