FYI: This time flying in from Darwin to Saigon I was asked by Jetstar to produce my return ticket, which I did not have. They explained to me that they have been directed by management to ask all passengers for their return flight details. On this occassion they allowed us to board, but informed us that return tickets may become a necessity for travel to Nam. Very surprised. I hope this doesn't continue.
I dont spend too much time in Sai Gon anymore, so it was nice to spend a few days there. However, now more than ever it seems the only way to live in Saigon on a teachers wage is to live like the locals. There are so many places charging prices on par with what we pay in Oz, but really offering nothing in the way of service nor quality. Best to steer clear of any establishment, beit a hotel or restaurant that is taking on a more western approach. Stick to the local hangouts and get out of D1 seems the only way to go.
Back home in Phan Thiet now where prices are much more reasonable. Pity the beach is still looking like crap. |

I feel the same way.
Over the last couple of years, prices on almost everything have gone up in Saigon. But the service, and the quality, remain the same.
I eat simple local dishes, and choose where I hang out carefully. |

On the return ticket front..... Royal Brunei into and out of SYD have done the same thing a few times, to extremes. Demanding a ticket to show an onward journey, even with passpost evidence that long stays were the norm.
I have seen nothing official about this though and as i have had many other journeys uniterrupted, i wonder if it is not just on overzealous counter jockey intoxicated with a whiff of power. |
