Does anyone who works for themselves have any experience with getting infonavit? I've been checking on the website to see if those self-employed can apply for the infonavit program, but haven't found anything yet. I'll go down there in person soon enough, but have you gotten infonavit other than through an employer?

I don't have experience that directly applies, but I have a few questions that might point you down the right path.

Have you ever in the past worked for a company that had you on IMSS? If so, go to the infonavit website and enter your old IMSS number to see how many points you have in their system. Even if you are not currently generating points you can use those old points of an INFONAVIT or COFONAVIT loan. The COFONAVIT is in conjuntion with a bank--for people who don't have enough points to get an outright INFONAVIT loan large enough to cover the house they want.

And TWO, are you currently paying into IMSS independantly? If so it will work the same as if you were employed.

If you said no to both, I think you are out of luck. INFONAVIT doesn't just loan people money. Part of the money your employer sets aside for your AFORE goes into an INFONAVIT account for you. You have to build up to a certain amount in that fund before you are eligible for a loan. So if you've never paid into it, your not eligible.

I think I once saw a public service anouncement for some other program for people who are not in INFONAVIT or FOVISSTE, but I was under the impression it was for extreme low income housing projects--do you want to buy a 500 square foot home?
