Good to see this. Stealing anothers pet for consumption is barbaric. This is a disgusting practice-what next-Babies?

It's good to see that a majority here agree with you.

In many poor countries baby snatching goes on and Vietnam is no exception. As I recall, over the years, both the French and American governments have put temporary bans on their nationals adopting Vietnamese babies, because of lack of proof where these babies originated from.

Foreigners paying big bucks for babies increases the problem.

I recall several articles over the years about people stealing babies from hospitals in the Mekong Delta. Remember one that said a house in district 4 had half a dozen babies for sale at about a million VND each.

Vietnam is definitely not alone on this and I believe this is much more prevalent in China.

Agreed, stealing another's pet is bad but it's the demand for dog meat, monkey meat, turtle meat, and other exotic meats that drives the market in MOST Asian countries. VN is just one of many.

Exotic is a major draw to terminating species. The more we (or governments) say "NO" - the more exciting it is to those that seek approval from their peers (or chosen peers, to be more accurate).

I've read this article and was very happy to see that people are fed up with this. There are increasing cases of people nabbing the dog thieves and just beating them to a pulp or killing them altogether. This article is especially interesting because it so happened in the north where eating dogs is much more prevalent. I believe historically, it started with the famine and gv't policy that affected the north and has carried over from there. The majority of the southerners don't eat dogs and this I do know.

There is a little dog meat place on the main strip of Mui Ne and it really bothers me. My hope is that someone someday will just burn it down. It's called, "Thit Cay". "Cay" is another name for dog meat, like beef is to cow.

I'm also curious as Koreans are big dog eaters, do they have this problem with dogknapping?

As far as adoption is concern, it is true that they don't or discourage the practice to their own people unless the person can provide proof of income and profession. It is believe that the children will be used as pan handlers or to sell lottery tickets. Contrary to reports of expensive adoptions, most of those for profit scams are shut down. Russia has a big problem with this. Adoption from a pagoda is nothing more than the usual expense.

((((Last Saturday a group of private citizens began chasing Binh and
Dang The Hung, 27, after they saw them attempting to steal a dog. ))))))

Am I the only one that caught this guys unfortunate name? Or fortunate, depending on if he lives up to it or not........Or am I just twisted?

Agree- Stealing a pet is wrong, then eating it is even more wrong.

Agree- Eating endangered species is wrong.

Agree- Inhumane farming and slaughtering methods are wrong.

Agree- There are some sound ethical and dietary arguments for avoiding all kinds of meat.

Disagree- Dogs are not for eating, a la the sacred cows of India.

They're meat. They are farmed. There are plenty of them. They serve, to at least a small portion of Asians, a very real purpose in the whole "ying and yang, hot and cold" balance of health, medicine, and diet. For others, it's a good night out with the mates, getting "man power," and for others, it's a fun way to check and see if their English teacher can back up his or her claims of being adventurous and culturally accepting. For far more, the majority, it's a meal that tastes good.

They're meat. So are babies-lets eat them too.

Dogs, being carniverous are at the apex of the food chain, therefore all the bacteria and germs they ingest is devoured by the people who eat them.

Medical evidence indicates that eating the flesh of a dog presents a considerably higher health risk than eating the flesh of a herbivore.

Eating dogs gives us "man power"? I am happy to pass on that if thats how I can get "man power", just as I pass on eating the fresh and beating hearts of the cobra to get "man power". There is NO evidence to suggest there is a connection-its all in the mind of the half drunken heroes who slurp beer and ingest the flesh of dogs- It must give them a real rush to gobble up a much smaller realtively defenceless animal.

Cultural norm or not- eating dog flesh is both unnecessary and dangerous.
As to being "culturally accepting", I guess it goes with the lying, cheating and general mistreatment of the "tay". Personally, there are some things that are just not culturally acceptable.

Current Legislation
Philippines
Dog meat eating was banned in Manila in 1982, and nationwide in 1998 via Republic Act No. 8485, known as the Animal Welfare Act. More recently, this national ban was bolstered by the Rabies Act (RA 9482), which upgraded penalties for convicted dog meat traders to include jail time and substantially increased fines as a means of limiting the spread of rabies.

Consuming an infected dog is a high risk activity and can cause the transmission of the rabies virus to humans. Because dog meat traders routinely source stray dogs, the threat of rabies transmission from dog meat is very real.
On February 1, 2006 the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that a 4 year old girl, who was given dog meat by her neighbours, died of rabies and encephalitis. Her father said she had developed high fever and symptoms of rabies shortly after eating the meat. She was rushed to hospital but died within a few hours.

Dr. Roberto Umali, regional director of the National Meat Inspection Commission, explains, Eating dog meat may cause anthrax, hepatitis, leptospirosis, internal parasites and brucellosis, a virus that causes abortion in both humans and animals. However, the most dangerous are the E. Coli 107 and salmonella virus, most common in contaminated meat.
Additional risks arise from the inherent nature of the meat being served in restaurants. One disease that is common in dog meat is Trichinellosis, a parasitic disease caused by eating carnivorous animals infected with the roundworm Trichinella spiralis. Prevalent in countries where the consumption of dog meat is common, symptoms range from nausea, heartburn and diarrhea to respiratory paralysis and death if the worms enter the central nervous system.

The best F*#king reason for not eating dog meat is that it's the only thing in the world that is guaranteed to love its owner(s). You can't say that about your wife, children, or parents...and that's good enough for me. For those of you who eat dogs, FYMF! Evil or Very Mad

Personally, I've never eaten dog meat and I have no intention of ever doing so!

My main objection to the practice is that it's standard procedure for the dogs to be tortured prior to slaughter because it is widely believed that the inhumane treatment makes the meat tastier Evil or Very Mad. I don't care what country someone is from, that type of behaviour is barbaric and I have nothing but contempt for people who are involved in the trade. That also goes for those people, who knowing the sheer cruelty involved, choose to consume the meat anyway. Whether that be Vietnamese who see it as part of their 'culture' (perhaps a 'lack of culture' would be more appropriate) or foreigners who want to prove to themselves, or others, how 'adventurous' they are Rolling Eyes.

"it's a fun way to check and see if their English teacher can back up his or her claims of being adventurous and culturally accepting."

I guess I fail on the adventurous, cultural acceptance, and I see no "fun" in this.
The "tay" who stands up for his/her convictions and refuses to indulge in this "fun, adventurous cultural acceptance" has more guts than the weak brained one who allows him/her self to be made a clown of by giving in so he/she can be accepted by the students etc who find this amusing.
They admire people who stand up for their beliefs and if you give in , they think you are weak and easily manipulated, which you are, just to make a few fair weather friends.

I am so adamant about this as a friend of mine died (encephalitis) from eating dog meat on a dare that he wasnt "man" enough to eat dog like a Vietnamese man. I guess he was having "fun".

By the way, do women get some "man strength" from eating dog meat? Or do they just get encephalitis, rabies and heart worm?

I hadn't considered the inherent health risks, good point, and good reason to avoid dog meat. And I'm very sorry to hear about your friend. Additionally, as I posted, inhumane treatment of any stock animal is wrong. Knowing that the dogs are tortured is good reason to avoid them.
