I'm sure I've seen the answer to this on other threads, but searching hasn't come up with it.
When is the ideal time to apply for China jobs? I'm looking for a university/college job and/or a private language school. In my experience, mills hire year round, but I know it's different with colleges. I'm looking for adult teaching only. Thanks. |

You may just catch this semesters intake (for a uni/college), I believe the term starts in September (but some courses don't start until October). Like you say, language mills are pretty much all year round. |

about 95% of college/universities in china start school this week or next. only in the most unlucky circumstances or offering the worst positions, pay, schools, locations would a school still be recruiting.
the answer is the month of MAY. |

Thank you for the replies, but I don't exactly see the answer in there. That means the best time to apply is... June? July?
Oh, haha. I missed your second sentence. MAY! Thanks. |

Start your search in March. Get a feel for what's out there. You may find a school that will announce an opening as soon as it learns that a teacher won't return in the fall.
April and May will produce advertisements from more schools. You'll have more to choose from than if you wait until June-August.
If you have no experience, no advanced degree or are lacking some credentials, the earlier you start the better.
Be aware, however, that your school will not apply for/issue the letter of invitation immediately. Your visa has a short fuse, so your letter of invitation (which you will submit to your local Chinese consulate when you apply for your Z visa) will be issued seemingly as late as possible so that your visa doesn't expire before you even arrive in China. Some people don't understand this. |

There may be a minor flurry in Dec/Jan when teachers who have 'decided' not to carry on into semester 2 leave.
'Decided' also includes ones who are being let go for whatever reason. |

I was thinking about that. I remember there being a lot coming and going at that time of the year when I was last in ye olde Zhong Guo.
It seems things have picked up for me here in the US, work-wise, but I still find myself looking through China job ads. Damn you, China. Must you forever haunt my dreams? |

It's very common for many public schools (including universities) to be scrambling urgently for FTs, now, all over China.
...and no, this does not automatically mean that they are bad schools. The reason why many schools neeed FTs now is because of the many "No shows" that occur. There are a huge percentage of FTs who fail to show up for their appointment as agreed. This often has nothing to do with the standard of the school, but with personal issues of the "FT".
If you really want to come back to China, now, get on the job forums. There are plenty of options available at this time of year, often because of the reason I mentioned, above. |

I am simply getting more of the same that I have seen since April (which means more to sift through, that could be good or bad). I took a job offer at the end of April and have had 3 easy paychecks and a 4th intense summer session of classes. I really don't understand why they were looking to hire back in April. It would have made more sense to wait and save the money.
So, I think the best time is really anytime. The question is how long are you willing to wait? If you need a job immediately, then maybe this is the better time (at the beginning of a school period). However, my approach is to give it a full month (2 if necessary) and go to interviews. I have shopped for apartments and jobs this way, returning to the one I liked. Usually the schools are still looking so they are quite happy to see a teacher return a week or 2 later (after recruiters lied and said they needed to be filled ASAP).
Happy hunting!!! |

This is true. Many posters claim that there are only scraps left at this time of year, but it's simply, not true |
