Although I have a BA and MA, I also have recent convictions for drug-related offences. Which countries are TOTALLY off-limits (eg. I know I'd be okay in Thailand and Cambodia). Are Korea and Vitenam a total no-no, even though my offences aren't of a sexual nature?
Do jobs in Korea and Taiwan/Vietnam (and other places on good $$$$) all require CRB checks? If so, will I get a chance to explain that I just had a very bad few weeks, totally out of character, and won't happen again? Or will I not even get a chance to explain?
Please help me get a grasp of the situation. |

Taiwan and Korea require the CRB for the visa not the job. Immigration won't care about the reasons. Their policy is no visa if the check is not clean.
Not sure about Vietnam (immigration or employer) but i suspect it is the same.
Japan does NOT require the check as part of the visa process. The market is tight but at least you are employable.

'Daniel Hayes'-so I guess the music career petered out eh???
never mind.
Try Cambodia-I think a criminal conviction or two may even be an asset there |

In my case, I was arrested (but not convicted) 2-3 times when I was 19. Twenty years later, when I was applying for substitute teaching at a local high school in the US, the arrests were found and I was asked to explain the situation. I never did and in fact took another job and then came back to Japan.
Obviously, Japan let me in to live and work. But I wonder what countries would not. |

I have read that a Criminal Record Check is not needed for a Taiwan work visa nor a Alien Residency Card. You only need one for a PARC (Permanent Alien Residency Card) |

It is just what They've said on Forumosa.com an expat site specifically for Taiwan. The people on that forum have obviously gone through it, so I'd trust them.

2nd post down
http://www.ah-taiwan.com/pages/info.php/taiwan-work-permits-and-arcs
This site also does not mention a background check being needed.
http://www.esljobproject.com/esl_info/visa_taiwan.html
This one as well makes no mention of a background check, it does mention an HIV/AIDS test, which I am pretty sure is needed.
http://www.alloexpat.com/taiwan_expat_forum/taiwan-working-permit-resident-visa-guide-t9.html
Another one. No background check but a HIV/AIDS check.
The only thing you have to potentially worry about is the Job asking for a background check, I know for an example, that HESS requires one. I don't imagine your regular mom and pop buxiban would.
Also, if you end up wanting to marry a Xiaojie while there, you'll need a background check if you want a spouse residency, and also, like I said before, if you want a PARC you'll also need to get one (but you can't apply for that until you lived there for five years anyway, so I don't think that'll be an issue for you, for a while anyway) |

According to one of those links, you just get it in Taiwan from one of their hospitals, apparently it is a pretty straight forward process and they all know the deal by now. |
