Hi there,

Anybody got any info on pet insurance (i.e. companies to go with) in Romania? I've got a kitty who I'm afraid is about to be diagnosed with some sort of condition (possibly thrombophilia, but it's a long, not as yet concluded, story) so I'd like to get her on an insurance plan to help with possible long term costs of testing and care.

Any info greatly appreciated!!!

Most of the insurance companies do it, it appears, but it's frequently an additional clause attached to your home insurance (which is now obligatory, but the way, so if you haven't got any, you should get some).

Looking around at a few sites, the insurance mostly seems to cover your getting a pay out if someone poisons, shoot, or kidnaps your dog (which seem quite popular activities here). Others also cover vets bills in case of sickness. Just make sure you check out the contract so you know it covers what you want.

Here are a few links I found:

http://www.asigurari-sanatate.ro/generale/animale_de_companie.htm
http://www.asigurarepro.ro/cat-asigurari-agricole/asigurarea-animalelor-de-companie.html

Can't recommend a company but perhaps if you go onto some animal/pet forums you might get some better advise there about which company is best. This is quite a busy forum:

Thanks Mike, that's very helpful, I will check those out.

Just one quick question though, is home insurance now obligatory even if you're just renting? Do you know which gov dept decided that (just so I can let my employers know to check out the new rules, so they can start telling my colleagues/new colleagues).

Hi,

The law came into effect on the 15th July and apparently they'll start fining people from the 5th August. I wouldn't panic too much at the moment as only about 20% of people have bothered to do it. Anyway, it's not expensive at 20 Euro per year. I'm 99% certain that renters don't pay it, the landlord has to, so you're probably ok if that's the case. If you have any expat colleagues/friends who own their homes, you might want to inform them though.

The law is 260/2008 and you can see it here (in Romanian):

Thanks Mike, I rent so I should be ok, although I'm going to be looking into it anyway so that I can get some pet insurance!

I'll inform friends and colleagues who own, and get the link to my employers so they can start informing new employees as a matter of course.

I really really appreciate your help with this! You're a star! Thank you!!! Mr. Green
