|
|
I came to China a week before Sept 11, 2001.
I taught at a joint British-Chinese venture and was responsible for marketing. I had a blast.
9 months in, I met a girl, slowly fell in love. Moved to Shenzhen, started a business. We got married. She started a different business. I had my business (Corporate Training) for the lifestyle benefits and better return on my time.
Her business is/was the exact opposite. An incredible time suck. Finally, after 5 years she started to make money. Pretty good money. She changed. I didn't.
We don't work anymore.
So, it is a divorce. No kids, no major property.
I am looking to move to move to someplace where I can save money and not deal with romance. No women. No attachments. I just need a year or two to be free from that personal dynamic.
I have a BA, a TEFL, 10 years of experience. No desire for girls, no drugs or drink.
I am an American with a clear and easy to understand Seattle accent.
Where should I go? Where should I apply? Any leads? |

Wrong. But this isn't about me and my experience, it's about the OP's.
If you want a place where you can avoid the stress of dating, and all interactions with the opposite gender, the ME's the place for you. Particularly Saudi.
Whether or not you can get hired in a job you actually want is a different matter. We'd need to hear more about your specific quals (BA in related or unrelated field, CERLTA, etc.). |

Go to Saudi. I live like a monk, entirely sober, save a packet (be careful about choosing the employer) and have got extremely fit. In fact I find it hard to drink alcohol now. Plenty of free time to pursue other interests and, believe me, you do forget about women. Having said that, once I'm back in the 'normal' world I do find myself gawping way too long at the girls, especially in summer time when the clothing comes off. And they appreciate it! Yippee! |

Thanks for the replies.
So ME in general and Saudi in particular.
In regards to my qualifications, I have a BA (American History), a TESOL, 10 years teaching experience, plus management experience.
Can I find a decent, non-horrible employer in Saudi with that? |

Depends on your definition of "decent," but your credentials won't impress. Saudi is about the only country where you have much of a chance for anything in the Gulf. Outside the Gulf, pay is survival level.
What exactly is your "TESOL"? They can range from mail order through a weekend class to real training with supervised classroom experience. The Gulf wants to see the last.
As to your experience, what counts more than the 11 years is what you taught. If it was mostly private lessons or conversation classes, it won't count for much. If it was Academic English to secondary or tertiary levels, you might want to look at some of the small colleges in Oman. The lifestyle is a bit more pleasant (still not much of a dating pool), but the pay is less than Saudi.

I'd go to Saudi and experience a yr and than get your heard straight and get some recovery time. You will be doing yourself some good with a very small chance of a rebound relationship. Focus on what you want in a partner, maybe work on a Masters in TEFL if that is where your heart is and save some money. Than when your ready move on in the coming years to a place where you can have access to stable to female, and yes we do exist, contrary to popular men views.
Sorry you are going through this, but be strong and be slow down in the seeking love. You will never perfect but you can with ensuring what you want and what you dont be more selective in finding a mate.
Besides being on your own for awhile allows you to really know who you are and what you want out of life. |
