Oh. Didn't notice that. Still, how much can a list like that change in just 2 years? Not much I assume. Maybe we're 50th instead of 51st. |

I still want to visit London someday.
But not if it resembles the devastated London in 28 Days Later or Children of Men.

My thoughts re London FWIW,

It is a Third World City . |
Agree totally. Now, rhetorically speaking, I wonder why that should be ? It didn't used to be a few decades ago, when we hadn't thought of this failed (in several areas) liberal concept called 'multiculturalism'. As an example, try walking around Tower Hamlets to get a visual explanation of how several parts of london got to be third world ..... and spreading.
I went through it once and I was worried for my safety.
IMHO, it is the people who make the city what it is.
London has simply got too many people; a lot of which simply do not have emotionally strong enough ties to look after it or care about it.
Personally, the only reason I have to go to London is to fly out of it or to fly in and drive the h*** out.
Best

Vancouver has come out on top in this particular survey, but a lot depends on the criteria on which the survey is judged.
According to www.list.moneysense.ca Vancouver is only judged as 29th best place to live in CANADA !!
You could read " The Dark side to the world's most livable city : just ignore the drugs and crime"
www.planetizen.com/node/48361
Vancouver's crime rate is on the rise, and the murder rate in 2010 was 2.6 per 100,000 compared to only 1.28 for the whole of the UK.
Cities that score best tend to be mid-sized cities in wealthier countries with a relatively low population density (ie. without overburdened infrastructure). That's probably why London was 53rd in the latest survey.
However, third world ? - please! Why would 20 million tourists every year come to a so-called " third world country"? |

Firstly, because we are talking London, not Britain.
Secondly, they do indeed see London but only an exceedingly small part of it. London isn't just Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, River Thames and Tower Bridge. Most tourists never venture out of Zone one and if they go out of london at all (which all tourists should be advised to do as long as they don't head straight to Manchester, which is on a par with London), they grab a train from Kings Cross etc and never really get a good look at the large swathes of third-worldness that exist in London.
I am sure that if they took the time to walk around Tower Hamlets Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham, Hackney etc, they would be quite taken-aback while the only 'tourists' who would feel 'at home' in Tower Hamlets would be those who come from a third world country where such conditions are regarded as quite the norm.

London in 2011 is certainly much more unpleasant than it was 40 years ago. Tourists ? Well they see a very small part of the city.
In my travels over the past few years my main tactic has been to avoid any of London;ls airports and fly via Schiphol or Frankfurt. Even Schoenefeld ! Who would have thought the the Gateway to the GDR would become a better airport than LHR or LGW ? |

basilthe rat,
I actually meant 20 million tourists to London, so I apologise.
However, I live happily in Tower Hamlets and I'm not from a third world. When did you last visit the east areas of London, which have had money poured into them for regeneration, gentrification, Olympics? Tourists now flock to Brick Lane and Bow.

Why (logically)would people flock from a third world country to another world country? Presumably London offers something which other third world countries don't have....such as democracy, free speech, free NHS, social benefits, education(some of the world's finest universities), history, culture (some of the world's best museums and galleries), architecture.....
However, I agree with scot47 about avoiding Heathrow airport (apart from Terminal 5) - totally overcrowded. Gatwick, Stansted and London City are markedly better. |

Basil - what institution was the biggest spreader of 'multiculturalism'? Here is a clue - when those horrible people from all corners of the empire came to Britain between 1948-1983 - it was because they were told that Britain was their home! And that they were British! Multiculturalism works just fine when Jermaine Defoe puts on an England shirt or the Gurkha Rifles do another tour of Afghanistan!
MOD EDIT & DON'T DO IT AGAIN What about your small but significant contribution towards Multiculturalism? Or were all the locals wherever you lived grateful for your presence because you were white and English? |

Good. All you haters of London can go so that I can find a bigger flat when I go back. To my favourite city. In the whole world. |

Someday, I will enjoy my dream trip to Europe. I'll just go backpacking for one or two months through Venice, Rome, Amsterdam, Zurich, Athens, etc.
But I will avoid flying into London Heathrow Airport. I've heard the fees and taxes there are too high.
Instead, I'll take the Channel Tunnel from Paris to London. And voila! I'll finally be in London. I'll probably have to stay at affordable hotels or hostels for several nights. (I don't know anyone in London.) From there, maybe I'll go to Dublin and see Ireland.
I can't wait to go to Europe someday! |
