I have been looking at the job boards, and noticed that many of the advertisements for university positions have dropped off significantly, now that the Summer has approached and the administrators have all gone home.

Do recruiters continue to stay in contact with university administrators throughout the Summer, even though they are on their break?

In other words, can you still get hired for a university position, even though it is the end of July, or August, and all the administrators have gone home for the Summer?

What about after they come back in September and find out that many of their teachers have decided not to come back? Can you latch on to one of these positions?

university administrators don't necessarily go home for the summer. they sometimes travel on school business (sorting out exchange programs), some of them are doing advanced degrees, and some of them have various types of workshops to attend. and then some of them stay home and relax.

our school's had one no-show in the five years I've been there. It's a good place to work and they've done a good job insofar as they've hired mostly responsible people who will show up.

our school doesn't use recruiters. People apply directly and either get a job or don't get a job. You'd be better off asking the recruiter your question about whether or not they stay in touch with schools over the holiday.

My school has 1-2 no-shows every semester. A lot of schools are the same way. Come September 1st a lot of schools will be scrambling to find teachers.

I'm hoping they do. I'm currently trying to find one so I can get out of the shitty place I landed myself into. I've been in contact with a recruiter (yeah, yeah, I know) who seems to have positions dotted around China. I've also sent out a heap of emails to universities but I figure most won't be checking their emails until they are back from holidays.

If you are flexible, then late notice jobs will start appearing in the next few weeks. Keep in mind some will suggest you come over on a tourist of business visa and then make a visa run to speed up the process. Not all will be trying to take advantage of you in this case, but be clear about who is paying for all of this (i.e. it might be you).

I think using a recruiter at this point is not a bad idea, some schools will go to them in a panic when someone they had falls through and they are in need of a teacher quickly. Do the legwork now, send off stuff and check the local expat websites and forums for job announcements in cities you are interested in, as well as the global sites.
