Hi everyone. I'm a Canadian hoping to go to Japan (specifically, Osaka) in September with a Working Holiday Visa.

My plan for work is to apply to the chain schools who interview here in Toronto, then apply for teaching jobs online a week or two before going, letting the employers know I'll be in Japan at so and so date for an interview.

I don't have my visa yet, as I still need to get all the requirements sorted out, including getting a plane ticket. Before getting it, I need to decide on a date.

I'm aware that the majority of hiring is done in August, but I have a work contract here until Sept 6 (although I can choose to quit a few days earlier).

So then my question is, should I leave before or after the first weekend in September? Will those few days make a difference or will I be stressing myself out (by leaving immediately after finishing work) for nothing?

What if I wait until the 8th? I may earn a bit more money from my job here, but could I be decreasing my chances of finding a job in Japan?

Thank you for any advice.

Uh, no, not really. Where did you hear that? A week in August is devoted to Obon, plus the mainstream schools are usually on summer break then. Since the fiscal/academic year for most places begins in April, the peak hiring for eikaiwas is in February/March, and ALTs other than JET are hired 3 months earlier or so.

So, you can leave in very early September.

Those few days will not make any difference, IMO. There is a small surge of fall hiring for October start dates, and with a WHV in your hand, that takes the pressure off employers who would otherwise have to wait weeks for a work visa.

Thank you very much for your reply Glenski. I meant to thank you earlier but I managed to disable my account shortly after posting this thread.

Anyhow about the hiring season, I was thinking of something else. You're right. I just had an idea in my head that since September was the start of the next term after April, there would likely be a bit of hiring done right before to replace teachers who have left or something like that.

Anyhow, tomorrow I plan to hand in my application for the WHV and get my plane ticket booked. I plan to leave on Sept 5th.

Hopefully everything goes well.

Update: No problems with the application, just gotta come back next week with my ticket and bank account statement to pick up my passport. Smile
