but is it strange for a prospective employer to require a copy of your passport at the very beginning of the job process? Thanks

| No, it's normal. They need to make sure you're from an English speaking country, and probably want to ensure you're obviously foreign and reasonably presentable. |

The meaning is:
They do not trust you, but you must trust them.
Before you give them a scan of your passport, BLACK OUT your passport number; They do not need it at this time unless they intent to use your ID illegally.
Again, they do not need your passport number, just want to see if you are a real person or not.
If they have any other motive, move on.
When schools want a scan of my passport, they get it. But I black out my birthday (not the year just the month and day) and the passport number/issuing location. |

Do you wear a tinfoil hat to keep out the thought rays too?
Seconding the other poster who said "it's normal".
If a school was bent enough to want to scam you in some way (and apart from the car thing I still don't see what they can do with your details) then they would also be bent enough to "hire" you, get halfway through the process and then drop you. |

Were you like that before you started teaching ESL in Asia? I know a few people who I believe may have flipped their lid because they've had to say 'Hi my name is.... What's your name?' one too many times. Just a theory. |

I always black out my passport number. Nobody has ever complained. This kind of information should be given on a need-to-know basis IMO.

This is idiotic. Showing one's passport is probably the MOST important part of the application process. It tells the recruiter / employer that the prospective employee CAN travel and is READY to travel.
True, the passport number can be used for illegal purposes, but as you yourself pointed out, the number can be blocked out until after the applicant is required to supply a scan that shows the passport number.
Despite the increased Sinophobic rants that appear in this forum, there's no reason to be suspicious of every request of every employer at every turn. |

Regarding the demand of a photograph (not a passport scan per se), this is also normal in the PRC and a few other countries. In nearly all cases, the reason is simple -- they want to make sure that:
* you are not black
* you are not Asian (in China they usually discriminate against Asians from abroad, including folks with Chinese ancestry)
* you are not grossly overweight (i.e. morbidly obese)
* you are not deformed or have a major physical disability
* you are not too ugly
* you don't look too old
That's about it.
There are exceptions to the above rule, but those are few and far between. The irony is that among the very best, most professional, most qualified, and most dedicated colleagues I've had in China since 2002 were a blacker-than-black physics teacher from Uganda, an Indian science teacher, an Indian director of studies, two IELTS teachers from Malaysia and the Philippines, and a one-armed man from Canada...
Cultural difference... perhaps. Unethical and short-sighted... you bet. |

I agree. One way around this somewhat controversial issue is just to attach a picture of yourself along with the other necessary documents, excluding the passport copy if you wish. I would bet money that it would be enough to get you past the interview stage (it has for me, for sure). |

Yes, it is usual. But they do not need your passport NUMBER and your DOB except the year to determine if they want you or not.

True, but any old fella or dame can get suckered into giving info.
With your Name, DOB and your passport number, I can do wonders. Adopt a child, buy a car, start a business under your name, borrow money....
I'm not posting to make a problem or be a drick. I'm posting to caution people to be careful.
My motive VS. others motives... I have nothing to gain to help others. |
