I am wondering what travel insurance companies that you have used and have been satisfied with? Do you reccomend getting one for the whole teaching contract?

Up until three years ago I used International SOS. Fortunately there was never cause for me to avail myself of any of the covered services during my time as a policyholder, so I decided to self-insure. See www.internationalsos.com . The company is quite reputable.

I do not count myself among the big fans of insurance companies. In this case, a person is basically buying a medical evacuation policy. Last week the company was offering for a limited time an annual membership in the amount of $291 (regularly $435). Benefits include the following:

$1,000,000 in coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation on all your trips within the year,
up to $500,000 coverage when you select the optional medical expense insurance (this costs significantly more),
26 alarm centers staffed by medical and security experts to take your calls before and when you travel at no additional cost to you,
access to International SOS member-only medical clinics around the world (helpful if you work in one of those cities), and
over 1,000 physicians and 300 full time security experts available to take your call 365/24/7.

If a person is young, healthy, and not prone to accidents, then consider self-insuring.

This serves as a reminder, especially if you have not lived here before, that without either decent insurance or a wad of cash (or actually the cash, and the insurance to pay you back) China can be a pretty scary place if you need medical treatment.

The media have reported widely about how a doctor in a Wuhan hospital in Hubei province removed the stitches from a migrant worker's wound just after stitching it because the patient didn't have enough money to pay the bill.

You may get better treatment than this, but China is wild west when it comes to medical treatment, especially if you are used to proper social welfare.

Question 2.7 of the new, four-page visa application form (http://www.travelchinaguide.com/embassy/pdf/visa-application.pdf) asks whether the applicant has medical insurance and, if so, the name of the insurer and a policy number.

I can only assume that the question was introduced for a reason (wasnt on the old visa application), i.e. insurance cover is / will become mandatory.

teaching in Shouguang with wife and 4 year old so I have got high insurance cover cost me $1100 for 3 of us but covers everything medical, dental, evacuation, extra expenses if a loved one at home gets sick, funeral, baggage loss and stolen items etc. for 12 months through www.worldnomads.

if you put in the promotional code YUMMY10 you get 10% discount this worked 4 days ago.

after extensive research, i really wouldnt contemplate China without health insurnace cover, if we stay for a few more years I may move us to a local chinese insurance.
