A few Q's.

I want to come to Hanoi. I have a CELTA and a year of teaching adults experience in Taiwan.

1)Could I get a job there easily in mid september when i arrive?

2) Does the city have a good nightlife?

3) Is it fun?

1) - Can't see THAT much problem obtaining a job there in September. It'll be AFTER the busy season....and it'll probably be part-time (leading you to have to get a second gig or do some freelancing to secure accommodations and food and basic necessities with Ha Noi's NOW stratospheric prices and inflation).

2) -SURE DOES!! If you are big on sitting out in Fisher-Price-sized plastic stools that were manufactured for a play set for a Western four-year-old child, in the 30C/87F evening heat, no breeze whatsoever, and about 128% humidity drinking watered-down draft beer made with water taken from the Red River at 20,000VND (a U.S. buck) a go......then Ha Noi is your kinda place for hot nightlife action!

3) - Oh God no.....I can't use "Ha Noi" and "fun" in the same sentence without throwing up a little in my mouth.....

4) - It's NOT Hai Phong...... Very Happy

Go to bed early, and be a good commie.

Now let's be fair. I have a lot of complaints about the very stressful city that is Hanoi, but the beer is not one of them. I get my Bia Hoi for 4000 VND ($0.20 US) for a big-ass glass of draft.

But if you are just visiting, there are several guest houses where $5/night will get you a bed, breakfast, internet, and all the tea and BEER you can drink.

Hanoi has tow other positives going for it: it is prettier than Saigon, and cooler, too (at least in the winter; no, it's damn COLD in the winter. The summers however may feel even hotter than Saigon because of the humidity.)

That all being said, EVERYTHING ELSE about the place is extremely stressful: air, food, water, transportation, money, communication, etc. Like right now, I need pants. I am not obese, I have a 40" waist on a 6' frame. I have not been able to find a size bigger than 36 anywhere. In fact, that is why I came on here tonight, to post this question.

Uh-huh. Before relocating to Vietnam I thought it would be a good idea to visit the country as a tourist before commiting myself to the move. Anyway I spent some time in both Saigon and Hanoi and decided that, although I didn't like HCMC, Hanoi was definitely doable.

Anyway I ended living about a year in Hanoi and towards the end I couldn't wait to get out of there! I've been living in Saigon for a while now and, for me, HCMC is a huge improvement. I just find it so much easier to live down here and, although the city itself is mostly pretty damn ugly, I think its got a much more pleasant atmosphere Cool.

Hanoi people and HCMC people are as different as earthlings and martians.
At least Saigonese tell you they are ripping you off.

GOOD POINT!! That's true...here in The North, we DO have something that kinda/sorta resembles actual seasons.....the winter here is great, except, as Kornan correctly pointed out, it CAN SOMETIMES (not often) feel very cold - so don't leave your winter coat at home....
