I have been offered a position in Zhuhai, China, but as it starts so soon (in a little over 3 weeks), they want me to come in on a tourist L visa and get a Z visa while I am there "hopefully" before the position would start. Is this possible to do in the Guangdong province? I know some provinces are stricter than others. I am also worried I might have to start teaching before I get the work visa. This is my first ESL job abroad as I just graduated with my Bachelor of Arts in May. Any advice? Is it possible to change an L visa to a Z visa on the mainland? If so any idea how long that would take on average? I would be flying in a week early if I do what they say and get a tourist visa.

As far as I know, no. You need to get an invitation letter and take it with some other documents out of the country. You can go to Hong Kong or Korea. When I went to Korea last year, I got it all done within 2 days.

Give yourself at least 3 weeks to get everything you need for the visa transfer. You'll also need to get a physical before you leave. Nag the school about this when you arrive, or else you will know you won't get your Z visa.

I think it will be easy to get your Z visa if you're going to work in Zhuhai. It's right next to the border with Macao. I've obtained a Z visa there before. If that's not still possible, you're not far away from Hong Kong, either.

I would be really careful if I were you - you don't meet the legal requirements to work in Guangdong (namely two years' work experience).

There is an international event coming up in neighbouring Shenzhen, and visa restrictions have tightened as they did before the Shanghai expo, the Olympics, and the Asian Games.

A friend of mine (who does meet all requirements) was headed to work in Guangdong and was due to start this week - their visa process has hit a bump and remains unresolved, the FT is currently stranded in HK.

Can your school really be sure that they can process working papers for teachers that don't fulfill legal requirements?

Agree that you need to be careful, and have your plan B ready.

Unless the school that is inviting you has some very special guanxi it's highly unlikely that you will be able to convert your visa in Guangdong Province, but as noted you are just a suburban bus ride (assuming the school is in Zhuhai proper and not just "environs") from the border with Macau.

The Foreign Affairs Office in Macau definitely has the authority to issue the appropriate visa - and it's a whole lot cheaper to stay in that city than it is in HK.

They actually are in the process of getting me a Z visa before I leave now since I was so uneasy about the whole changing from an L to Z on the mainland. I did just graduate and am "22ish". I currently work at an Intensive English Program in the US as a TA.

I also have 2 years of experience as a tutor for non-native English elementary students, 4 years experience working with college level international students in conversation courses, 2 summers of experience working with the IEP that I currently work for, and 1 1/2 years experience tutoring French to middle schoolers. It's not post-grad, but they seem to think its enough.

I don't have a TESL certification but I am in the process of getting one. Should I be worried about the requirements?

Zhuhai PSB has become tough in the recent time.I doubt that you would be able to change L to Z.A teacher working for a school there had to leave China because the PSB refused to transfer his visa to his new school.Be very careful.

However, in Zhuhai, leaving China means just popping across the border to Macao.

I doubt they have to go back to their home country. I think it's more "out of the country".
