My husband and I are both Principals in the US (and therefore taught before that), and would like to teach overseas for a few years. We have two young children, so I can no longer do the cram school teaching I did in Taipei when I just got out of college . I have two questions:
1. What is the pay and stability difference in working in an American School vs. an International School?
2. In which countries can you save the most money working in either an American School or International School?
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Err, once you leave the USofA, American schools (apart from armed forces ones) ARE international schools, and they run the full gamut from top of the line to places where parents park their kids because they can't keep up with the higher academic standards in the local schools.
For instance, in Hong Kong, schools run using American (style) systems include Hong Kong International School (right at the top for pay and facilities), the American International School (lower middle) and Sears Rogers (no comment). Then there's the Canadian International School, Delia schools (also using Canadian curriculum), Australian, German Swiss, French, Korean, Japanese, Singapore, Chinese and Norwegian international schools, each of which runs an English language stream parallel to those in the language of the sponsoring country (woops, the Aussies think they do speak English ), not to mention all the other private EMI schools which don't even have "international" in their names.
So you might have to make your query a bit more specific in order to find the sort of advice you are seeking. |

Sounds like you need to start looking at these websites:
www.tieonline.com (job ads)
www.internationalschoolsreview.com (Good forum there, low traffic but lots of useful old posts to read)
www.tes.co.uk (click teaching overseas under the role section in their forums. It is more geared towards British teachers but still useful.)
Also google Search Associates. Once you have looked at all of those websites you will have more of any idea about the world of international teaching.
Good luck with your job search. |
