I've been reading so many negative and scary posts about ESL jobs in Saudi. I've been offered a few positions but I'm wondering what's up with what? What do you look for to know you are going to work in a legitimate, fair and legal job...All ESL jobs in Saudi can't be looongg hours, being places at different places, substandard housing etc etc...I'd like to hear some positive stories

You really want to be looking for facts. If they're negative, well, so be it. If they're positive, that's fine.

So...do you want positive facts or positive stories, i.e. are you looking for information to help you make an informed decision or do you want stories that make you feel good about accepting one of those offers?

Don't worry, OP, if it's positive stories that you REALLY want to hear. It'll be the the negative stories that you get tired of hearing and decide, IN YOU MIND, that people are just posting negative stories to keep newbies from trying to take the golden jobs that they currently enjoy.

It's kind of like a psychosis!

Yes, of course I want the FACTS..the truth....and yes, I would love to accept a position but I want to be as aware as possible of the 'ins and outs'...separate the wheat from the chaff:)....talk of passports being taken...when I do the research this doesn't seem to be legal...what's the truth? I figure there are people with experience here who know the realities and wouldn't mind sharing:) hopefully:)

Well, people have posted repeatedly that, although it may be technically illegal to take passports from employees, most employers in KSA do it anyway. That's a fact.

Expect your employer to demand your passport for "safekeeping" (you know, like the employer did for their 17,000 employees and then their storage facility burned along with all the passports-do a search on this forum for that article).

I guess it all depends on how much you really want to work there. No job in saudi is completely 100% fair and legitimate (according to our western conception of these terms). It's up to you to determine how some minor inconveniences will affect your time there and how it will weigh against the positive aspects of the job such as being immersed in a new culture and environments with a different set of moral and ethics (and of course the money).

"This doesn't seem legal". Asa! You want rule of law? Paid on time? Respect?

Oh, I get it, you have mistakenly wandered on to the Saudi board.

I have relatives who work in Saudi.

They make a lot of money. But they are in high-earning professions (engineering and nursing).

Unless you have years of experience, a post-graduate degree and are employed at a prestigious school or university, ESL jobs may be few or low-paid.

And my relatives complain that there isn't much to do in Saudi. Nothing but sands and malls.

Imagine...an ESL job that is menial in an environment that is dull.

It's scary!

Shocked

Wow...quite depressing for someone that just got a CELTA and want to find some experience. Rolling Eyes

What is low pay? What figure would you say is below what you consider an acceptable off if you have a CELTA and a graduate degree with teaching experience?
