Bummer, I missed the JET deadline. The biggest disappointment is that my time has opened up for the upcoming year but probably won't be open for the year after.
Any advice or possibility for getting around the JET deadline? I could start in 2 months or 5 months and, from the feedback I've gotten from friends, would prefer to work for JET.

Sorry to say, I think that JET is pretty strict with deadlines and it might not be possible to get in for 2004 if you haven't gone through the complete application process. This is probably because they receive so many applications, then all the interviews, ect. But it never hurts to contact them and ask about it.
If that doesn't work, check out www.bigdaikon.com. There is a post somewhere on there about other options to work in Japan for those who either didnt get accepted into JET or missed the deadline.
