Hello All

I'm going for an interview for an English teaching post at Al Sahwa School in Muscat, Oman. I realize this is largely a TESOL/TEFOL forum but does anybody have any useful comment to make about the school as a place to work? I've been teaching English for 16 years in South Africa and, as a single person, am looking to broaden my experience.

Any information would be appreciated.

I have worked in Al Sahwa Schools for the last 8 years. I am currently the Assistant Co-ordinator for Elementary Education. There are two schools on the campus offering single sex education for Omani children. The schools are bi-lingual. Teachers in Elementary usually teach a parallel girl's class and boy's class for 3 lessons each out of 8 a day. The other 2 periods are non-contact time. The children study English, Maths and Science in English from KG. Class sizes at the moment in Elementary are no bigger than 20. Most of the teachers of PE, Music and Art teach in English.

I have lived in Oman since 1990 and have been in the Gulf since 1977. Oman offers a lot of opportunities for outdoor pursuits - camping all year round on deserted beaches or up mountains, scuba diving, rock climbing, watersports. Oman is a very clean, safe country to live in, lots of modern amenities, shopping malls, 5 star hotels.

If you want any more info, let me know.

Liz

Hi Liz,

Just out of curiosity... what is taught in Arabic? Other than the obvious Arabic and Religion. History?

Where is the Sahwa school located?

Dear Ms Craig

Thank you for posting your reply to my query. I have done a great deal of soul searching about the job offer and, after some very positive negotiations with Dr Platts, have decided not to pursue the opportunity at Al Sahwa. I've put this on the site to pre-empt further unnecessary responses.

Thanks again

I also am wondering about the school.
I have read alot of criticisms about administration but I
am wondering if things have improved in the last 6 years?
What condition is the housing like ?
Any updates would be much appreciated.
